Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

Do NOT apply for a [redacted] credit card believing they will honor the promotion of crediting your account for $35 upon sign up. It is a lie. For 2 months I have been told they are "working on the issue, I won't get my credit, I will get it, and I don't knows," so I am paying my balance and terminating my account.

I HATE this so called bank. With our tax return we paid off Sams balance of 1,400$ one month later they lowered balance to $200.00. Paid off care Credit of 2,000$ received letter this week they closed account with no warning. Had amazon account with limit of 1,500$ balance was 460.00 they lowered credit limit to 461.00$ all this happening with no warning. This bank has screwed my husband credit so bad. Stay away from this bank. My husband's score before all this happened was 640 it is now a 587. How can they do this with no warnings?

Will harras you to another planet. Called Sunday morning while we were in church, and then several times during the rest of the day fo a late payment. Scam intrezt rates and our credit was not that bad. Beware!!!!

I paid my Amazon store card on time every month. Each payment was made manually on their website. Each payment received a confirmation message staying it had been received. No problem. Except the payments weren't processed. So I was charged late fees, and now my account is past due despite making the payments. Their online system is faulty. At this rate I'll be paying off my card and no longer using it. No problems before September 2014. Then suddenly no payments will make it through...

I have signed up to receive notices of upcoming payments due from several companies, but for the third or fourth time Synchrony has failed to inform me of a payment due, this time to Amazon credit. I'm sure Amazon will refund my late fee as all the others (including Lowes) have, but this is just ridiculous.

Needed to use my synchrony account as an external account for another financial institution that required a routing number for my account. After realizing it was no where on my statement, I tried to look for it on the website (has no where to search on it). I eventually called and a rep gave it to me. I asked if I could get this in an official manner (on a bank letter head), the rep informed me that it would take 24 hours and I can find it in my message center on the website after logging in. I called 24 hours later, that rep told me it will take 48 hours. I called 48 hours later and that rep told me it will take 72 hours. The three of the four times that I called, I asked to speak to a supervisor and never got on a phone with one. Either the rep couldn't connect or the rep hung up. I wished I would have read these reviews before opening an account. Now I am on my way out!

All told, I have had a very positive experience with my CareCredit account since I opened it in 2012, and have used/paid it faithfully. It has really helped me out in several jams regarding dental work, and vet bills as well. I find the service to be fantastic, and helpful!

Recently, I have come across some financial hardship (my husband was laid off from his job). We are coming up on the end of two 6 month promotional periods. Is there a way to get a one-time extension on the promotional periods, until I get back on my feet? It would be greatly appreciated, if this could be considered. Thank you!

My husband and I have spent the entire morning and part of the afternoon on the phone with Sychrony bank and JC Penney. I have had an account with JC Penney for over 10 years. I have a credit limit on my card of $5800 and currently have a 0 balance. My husband opened a JC Penney account in the store in June of 2015. He still has not received his card. He has called 3 times and been told that there must be a problem with our post office, although we have received our new American Express cards and the JC Penney bill for his card!

In the midst of the problem he was having getting his card, I received an email from JC Penney asking me to activate the new card that they sent me! I did not receive a new card either! They also stated in the email that the card that I currently had would be deactivated in January 2016. I called and whenI put in my current credit info, was told that my account "was not valid" by the automated system. The next person I spoke to said the email was wrong, they had never sent me a new card, but they would send one now. I was also told that my current credit card could still be used and that the automated system was wrong. At this point I didn't know who to trust as I had already been disconnected once. The next person I spoke to said to cut up my current card and that they had indeed sent a new card. Since I haven't received a new card, they would order a new one. The third person I talked to said I shouldn't have cut up the old card! Neither JC Penney or Sychrony bank could tell me what the problem is with my husband and I not receiving the cards. We are waiting another 7-10 business days. Me for my second card. And my husband for his third. If we do not receive our cards, we will be closing all accounts tied to synchrony bank, including Ashley Furniture, Care Credit and JC Penney. It's unfortunate that this finance company will cost so many retailers our business over the upcoming holidays.

I have been forced to endure this bank because of my Chevron gas card. Somehow this horrible bank was able to gobble them up too. I discovered that 3 more of my cards are also held by them. All four of my cards have had one problem after another mostly getting them paid. They have an odd billing cycle in which when you pay the amount you see it's not actually the amount you owe. You don't find out there is more owing until you are hit with interest and late charges. I called this bank this morning. I have a $17 charge on my gas card only they can see. I charged $14 on the 20 April. That charge is showing but I have no idea what the other charge is for as I don't see it. The voice in the unknown country had the audacity to blame my computer! It was picking and choosing what to display! Very odd woman! I do not know where this bank came from or how it managed to take over so many American credit companies. I've discovered that WalMart is amongst them. Clearly this bank and its history is suspect and needs to be thoroughly investigated. With so many negative responses here alone something is just not right!

Brand new customer, can't set up an on line account
Can't get a human on the phone!
Not impressed at all

My credit account was initiated by Lumber Liquidators. I was encouraged to set it up as an automatic bank monthly withdrawal and I was assured that this would then pay off in 18 months interest free. It was my fault that I did not watch the account more closely, because when the automatic withdrawal did not pay off the entire loan at precisely 18 months, Synchrony charged 29.9% on the entire loan amount.

They would not negotiate an amortized interest payment and continue to charge 29.9% annual interest on the monthly balance.

This bank practices deceitful lending. They count on customers not keeping close track of their balance so that they unknowingly default and become subject to these usury rates.

DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS UNETHICAL BANK!!!

I received a strange letter from a SYNCHRONY BANK office in [redacted] advising me of a rejection of a application for a WALMART credit card. It appears they did due diligence on a fake application for a credit card. I did not apply a WALMART card so it appears to be attempted ID Theft.

I could not verify the return address. It did not appear on any SYNCHRONY BANK locations.

When trying to access charge account online, if account is not current you cannot view. Customer service rep did not tell me this, would not tell me account activity. Called twice to 2 different agents. Heavy accents. For a simple request this should not have taken over an hour. As usual, I was forced to go through a long automatic system that did not address the topic I was calling about, first, before I even got to an agent. Bad customer service.
Finally a supervisor helpful and explained issue to me.
I do NOT agree that a customer should be locked out of account

I DO NOT recommend Synchrony Bank. I have attempted for 3 months to receive documents for a loan I am supposedly responsible for. On 4 occasions when I called the CSR would pretend not to hear or understand me saying there was a bad connection. I was calling from a landline. The CSR's hung up on me when I was attempting to ask for these documents. It wasn't until numerous calls I finally spoke with some one and they said they could not send me the documents. In the meantime I am stuck with a poor credit score with on one from Synchrony trying to correct this. DO NOT use this bank! Poor customer service! They do NOT care about people or customers!

I made a mobile deposit of $875 on July 25 and received an email on July 30 stating that the photo was unacceptable and the dp was declined. This delay is inappropriate. It makes mobile deposits unusable for me. My other bank instantaneously informs me if the dp went through or if I need to retake the photo.

I opened a jumbo cd in Feb., they were suppose to wire the money from my other bank, but they did not do it, then I contacted them and they told me to go ahead and send the money and they would be no problem with honoring the rate quoted on my cd. I looked on line to find they actually locked in my rate much lower than quoted, and assured of over the phone. I have had to contact them (with lots of phone prompts and waiting) twice (a second request for corrections from the back office) to correct their errors, and wrong information and wait another 3-5 business days for the magical answer. I would not recommend this bank that doesn't wire draft correctly or give correct information when called. Send your money to an honest and reliable bank.

I purchased the furniture from VCF store in January 2014. I did not get full explanation about the fact that I will be charge 29.9% interest on the initial purchase after 6 month. I purchased furniture before and it was free financing or some kind of a rational %%. Most importantly, I was aware of it and ready for my statements. This time I extremely disappointed and upset. Terms were not clear. I will NEVER deal with this company (Synchrony Bank/ former GE) and will NEVER purchase anything form VCF. Plus, will tell about my experience everyone I know. The furniture is ok but because of the fact that they performing scam on people by not clearly explaining all the terms and conditions.

In May 2015, I borrowed $7,100 through Care Credit/Synchrony Bank at the urging of my dentist to help me pay for dental work. My dentist explained that I could have 18 months interest free financing, which sounded. My plan was to pay as much as I could for 18 months to lower the balance, and then pay it off in full at the end of my interest free period. I enrolled in paperless statements and automatic payments to minimize paper and make sure my payments were always made on time. I have never missed a payment. Because I was able to see that my monthly payments were being made, I didn't notice that I wasn't receiving statements by email.
Fast forward to January 18th, 2017. I received an email from a 3rd party credit monitoring service, Credit Karma, telling me that my credit score had gone down because of a large increase on one of my credit card balances. I immediately suspected fraud, and at the very least someone had made a mistake.
It turns out, that the 18-month zero interest promotional period had ended on my Care Credit/Synchrony account, and they charged my $3,013.95 in interest - which had been building over the course of the 18 months. And - the interest rate jumped from zero to 26.99%! I was shocked. It didn't seem like this could possibly be legal. I had never been notified that my zero interest period was ending, and was never given the opportunity to pay off my balance. I didn't even realize this had happened until over a month later when I checked my credit! My balance went from $3,684 to $6,856.94 overnight. It was like I had made almost no progress at all on this balance over the last 28 months.
Immediately upon figuring this out, I called the Synchrony customer service number located on the back of my Care Credit card. I wanted to find out if there was any way I could pay off the balance in full before the interest had been charged. I spoke with a total of four representatives, all of whom read to me from the same script about Synchrony's policies regarding this sort of thing. I was told that it is not Synchony's job to inform their customers that their zero interest period is ending, and it was written in bold writing on my statements (which I had not been receiving) for the last 3 months. They said that they do have a 30 day grace period, but I had missed that cutoff by 16 days. They were extremely unapologetic and practically smug about the fact that there was absolutely nothing they could do to help me. Even given the fact that I experienced a death in my immediate family, imposing additional financial hardship, made absolutely no difference. They ensured me that what they were doing was legal under fair banking laws. From a fair and decent human being's perspective, what Synchrony is doing is predatory, misleading, and unethical.
Doubling someone's debt over night can be devastating for someone who lives paycheck to paycheck and only makes $35,000 per year. I had read over the terms when I received them at the beginning and listened closely to what my dentist knew about the plan, but I was never told in words and had no understanding that this would happen. Had I known I would have never borrowed the money.
I am surely hoping Synchrony will read this and make it right. Unfortunately after reading other online reveiews of their business that seems extremely unlikely. Beware of doing business with this company! I will be transferring my balances with them asap if they are not able to resolve this.

I purchased furniture at Ashley Furniture in Quakertown, PA in November 2016.The salesperson explained that the Promotional Terms I was signing up for was No Interest and No Payments for 12 months.

As long as the account was paid in full in the twelve month period there would be no interest. I received a statement from Synchrony Bank in the mail today. The statement is demanding a payment by December 16, 2016 or there will be a late fee and an interest charge applied to the account. I called customer service and of course had to speak to someone in a foreign country.

They of course could not help me. I asked to speak to a supervisor. After 25 minutes of being on hold (they thought I would hang up) a woman named Olivia picked up the call. I explained to Olivia how the representative explained the terms of the agreement to me at signing.

That I was getting 12 months no interest and no payments as long as the balance was paid in one year. Olivia then began to say how sorry she was that I was mislead. Olivia refused to amend the agreement. Because I called Synchrony Olivia's supervisor would not accept my call and that I would be put on a call back list.

Calls are usually returned within 72 hours. So I can expect a call around the 72 hour mark. I found that the terms as explained to me are not the same has what Synchrony claims.

I closed my account and will no longer do any business with Synchrony. Very dissatisfied.

I had some expensive dental work that needed to be completed and I wanted to pay this off tax free using a pay flex card. I called the company before applying to ask if I could do this and if there would be any additional fees or issues and was told that this was no problem.
I quickly found out that the only way I could pay the care credit bill was to call in to customer service, wait about 10 minutes and make the payment. It was a hassle, but I dealt with this for several months as they always waived the $10 fee because there was no other way to pay.
However, this month, I called in to make my payment and was advised that the company could no longer afford to pay customer service for making payments and I would have to pay the $10. Not only that, but the $10 would be tacked onto my bill and possibly accrue interest until the full balance was paid off.
This is a company that charges almost 29% interest for any charges that are not paid off on time - so the excuse that they could no longer incur the cost of customer service was ludicrous!
This is an example of very predatory lending behavior and I am appalled that this is happening. I am fortunate to be able to pay off my balance or switch to another card but many people will be stuck trying to pay additional money because of corporate greed. When I went to submit a complaint I realized that this was rated as a one star business. Why is it getting an A plus rating.
