Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

When this was just GE bank, everything was great. I used my carecredit for my pets. I only had a $500 limit and always paid off my bil on time and all the time. When this it company took it over, I received a letter that because of my credit report as a whole, they closed my account. I wrote to them and they stood by their decision. Well their decision is itic. If a customer is paying you all the time, on time, then why on Earth would you further tarnish their credit report by closing an account. I depended on this for my pets. It really came in handy and this is just unfair. They suck and I am glad to see that they are getting MANY complaints on their ridiculous practices. YOU SUCK!

I have nothing nice to say, they are a very hard bank to deal with. The main issue would be I paid 1000s and my bill hardly went down any. The intrist rates are rediculously high. Every time I called and spoke with customer service it was extremely difficult to get any questions answered. To pay a bill all they want is money, there's no genuine niceness. I wanted a pay off amount and it took forever. Changing of a name doesn't hid the fact they are still a horrible company.not to mention the language barrier. Talking to a supervisor gets you nowhere, maybe even a step back. Will never do business with them again.

Synchrony Bank makes it hard to pay on line. I finally gave up and called them which is also an experience to get to talk to a human being and not the machine. Then I get some foreign person who's English sounds like pig-Latin and still no success. I like to pay my bills the first of every month. This all started on the beginning of the month when I asked for a paper bill and was promised. It came 3 weeks later and with a late fee charge which I resented since they were the ones making it difficult. It's not that I can't pay the late fee, it's the principle of their lousy communication system. I refuse to pay this and told them so. I have been paying every month the same amount and sometimes more. All this for a Care Credit card I was forced to take when the emergency vets charged me $2000 to kill my cat. It isn't accepted in many places, including other vets. So I have this stupid card I never use and still paying it off to an unsympathetic bank. ARGGHHHH!

I am a very ex customer of Synchrony Bank. I opened an account with Synchrony by applying for an Amazon Store Card. Shortly after the account was opened I made a purchase and sent 2 checks to synchrony in full payment of an Amazon Store Card purchase before I had even received an invoice from them. Shortly after sending the checks I discovered that I had used the wrong Synchrony account number on the checks. I immediately called Synchronies 866 number and spoke with a gentleman with a heavy foreign accent to the point that I was getting perhaps every other word. Finally I indicated to this individual that I was going to put a stop payment on the checks I had already sent (he had no idea where they were) and resend another payment with the correct account number this time. He said (I think) he would take care of things on his end. Today I tried to make an amazon purchase using this account and received notice that the account had been closed because of the returned checks! I signed into my Synchrony account and It had a credit balance (as in they owe me) of $140. I tried to phone in to Synchronies Customer service dept and my call was answered by a lady whose English was less understandable the gentleman I had spoken to weeks before. I explained to her that I had a credit balance in my account of $140 and I was trying to purchase an item from Amazon for $62. She said sorry your account has been closed but I could apply for another card. I was on the verge of becoming far less polite so I simply said send me a check for the credit balance that was in my now closed account and to please make sure that the account was closed permanently!. She said she would do that but it would be 3 to 4 weeks before I saw the check they were sending to me. It is amazing to me that a screwed up operation like Synchrony can stay in business..... Perhaps they wont!!

Worst customer support ever. Additionally, the bank's algorithm to determine creditworthiness seems to be badly broken. I got an email from Syncrony Bank informing me that my credit line on my Sam's Club MasterCard was being lowered from $6500 to $250. This was curious to me, as I don't have a MasterCard, I have a Discover. Was I ever in for a surprise. I made my last purchase in August, for about $10 at Sam's. Forgot all about it. No problem though, I get bills electronically. Checked my account in early September. Balance due $0. Still good. At the end of September, I got an ominous looking letter from Syncrony Bank regarding my Mastercard. Strange, since I don't have one. Apparently, GE Capital spun off Syncrony (clearly their less-desirable component). I panicked, thinking there was an identify theft event afoot. What I found was a note telling me that my credit line had been reduced as above. The reasons were: “Number of times the account balance was paid in full over the last 12 months was too low”; “Low ratio of payment to current balance over the last 3 months for this account”; “Low ratio of payments to balance over the last 3 months for this account”; “This account was past due at last billing”. My balance was paid in full (in months where I had a balance) for at least 5 consecutive YEARS. August was the first month in the last 6 months where I even HAD a balance”. And I never received a bill for my Discover card. I have never received or activated the MasterCard I never requested. The key here is notification. The bank is required to notify me of material changes to my account. A sane person would have to think switching cards from Discover (which I only had one of) to MasterCard (which I have enough of that I don’t need another) would qualify. When I went to www.samsclubdiscover.com (yes, it’s still called that), I saw the reduced balance, and the late payment (for $10 charge against a $6500 balance for heaven’s sake!), I called the number on my letter immediately. I explained to the first person I talked to that I was upset about the loss of credit (this has great potential to hurt my credit score). Of course, although pleasant, he know virtually nothing. He agreed with me and removed the late charge, but said he couldn’t do anything about the credit line reduction. He transferred me to an account manager named [redacted]. [redacted] was terrible. He told me the decision was based upon information obtained from a credit reporting agency. I assured him he must be mistaken. My credit scores are a couple of points below 800. He told me that if my credit improved, Syncrony would periodically review my information, and may consider raising my limit in the future. Thanks for that, [redacted]. I’m sure Syncrony has the conversation recorded. Listen to the recording folks. [redacted] basically called someone with an 800 credit score a liar. After the call, I check all three reports. They were the same as the previous month - perfect, with no negative factors. NOT A SINGLE ONE. There was only on difference. One company had lowered my credit line — Syncrony. [redacted]’s crass assertion that “the information was obtained from credit reporting agencies” was patently false. The reasons provided in the letter pertained only to Syncrony account (which I never knew I had). I’m insulted and embarrassed by this. BTW - on the Syncrony website, before I access my account information, I’m invited to “activate my MasterCard”. WHAT MASTERCARD? I NEVER RECEIVED ONE!! NOR DID I RECEIVE NOTICE THAT I WOULD EVER RECEIVE ONE! I didn’t activate the card. I won’t until this is cleared up. I won’t cancel this card though. I’ve had this account for 8 or 9 years. Removing it would lower my average account age, and reduce my credit score. As much as I despise them, I’ll keep it. Here’s the bad news (for them) - I won’t shop at Sam’s again - ever. Nicely done, folks! It’s probably worth mentioning at this point that I’m and engineer at a company which specializes in “big data” and analytics of same. I don’t owe you this, but I’ll do you a favor. You’re algorithm (or whatever Frankenstein-mechanism you’re using) is broken. I’ll even tell you where - when you switched from Discover to MasterCard, you failed to consider the existing payment history. That explains all the conditions you used to mistreat me, and I can’t imagine how many others. I wish you’d fix this, but as bad as [redacted] was, and as bad as your recent online reviews are (including those on this site), my expectations aren’t high. Syncrony can fix this. I'll share my credit reports with them if that would help. Again, my expectations are not high.

This bank handles Banana Republic Visa card and I've just had one of the worst customer service experiences.

I called them after unable to update address online and after a long system message (including your balance and payment info), I was finally in line to speak to a real person. The first representative who answered me said she'd give me instructions on how to update my address. Well, I said, I had tried online myself and encountered problems. Then I told her where in the steps the glitch was. Guess what? She couldn't understand what the issue was. Her English was ok, with an Indian accent, but her grasp of basic customer service skills left much to be desired.

After several minutes of back and forth, it hit me that she had no clue how to update an address other than reading the script of generic instructions. So I asked to be transferred to her supervisor in order to accomplish the simple task of address update. She first gave me excuses of her supervisor's line was busy, etc, etc. I said, I insisted and was willing to hold. Then she simply hung up on me. Shocker.

Then I called again, speaking to a male representative. Again after giving the details of my card, etc, I politely asked to be transferred to a manager at the customer service dept. A few minutes later, a Spanish speaking person answered the line. Upon realizing I do not speak Spanish, she switched to English and told me she was with legal service within the bank. Again, I exppained to her what happened with the previous two associates and asked, in no uncertain terms, to speak to one of the supervisors for customer service.

After a wait, a woman answered the phone but quickly hung up leaving me barely the time to say hello. What is going on with Syncrony bank customer service for Banama Republic Visa? This is so bad that it's almost funny, if you do not need their service.

I'm going to cancel my account as soon as I get the statement next month.

Synchrony Bank continues to call my home for a person with the same last name as ours. No message was left. The calls came 4-5 times a day with no one speaking. When I called to see who was calling and what was needed, I received a rude woman at the other end accusing me of not telling the truth as to who I am, who my husband is and what kind of cards we used. When she revealed the name of the person she was looking for, I told her that she had poor information. She asked for my and my husband's last four social security numbers---private information that she has no business asking for. she was unprofessional, accusatory, and rude. Your problems should not be my problems. If a company needs to take such an attitude because of the clinets that they are accustome to doing business with, perhaps they need to do a bit more background checking before doing business with such people.

Synchrony bank is a scam, I tried to pay them twice with accounts that have well over the amount of my $57 payment, the won't take the money, they send it back and then RAISE MY BALANCE!!! They do this to try and auck money out of you, and if you call still no person on the other end until you press a million buttons, this is not right! And the people there can't even find your account, but they blow up your phone hourly. I do plan to tale legal action because I have tried to give them the payment, they just won't take it!

Synchrony Bank has taken over my Sam's Club Credit card and dealing with them has been the most outrageous and unpleasant experience of my life. To be clear, the customer representatives are polite and well-trained to diffuse the situation, but the policies are reprehensible.

1. I asked not to have my call recorded or monitored and they refused to oblige. I believe this is or should be illegal. I requested a copy of the recording and they said I'd have to get a court to subpoena it. I was offered the option of mailing in a letter instead, but this would obviously be too slow.

2. I made a $3000 payment to my account using an electronic payment from my bank the same way I do every time. The time it takes for the payment to clear is always 48 hours and it immediately frees up my line of credit. After 16 days they still have not released these funds. I've made two phone calls to their supervisors about it and I was finally able to get a response that made linear sense, but is still an unacceptable practice to me. The supervisors have no authority to release the funds, nor does anyone else once a hold has been placed on them.

The reason for the hold is that I made TOO MANY PAYMENTS IN ONE STATEMENT PERIOD. What???? That's right. I have sent them too much money or more accurately, I've sent money too many times.

I've never been late on a payment and I have no history of retracting payments. My only crime is being too vigilant and proactive with my account. As this is both my personal and business card, I run a lot of transactions through this credit card. For a while I was constantly exceeding my line of credit and having to run to Sam's club to make "cash payments" with my debit card. These clear immediately. I finally got to a point where I could make the payments enough days in advance that I could free up the funds without driving across town at the last second. Now I'm being punished for it.

Here is the reason I was given for the hold. On electronic payments, banks have up to 21 days to retract the payment. This means I could retract the payment now if I wanted to and there would be no penalties or fees, or so they say. But I don't trust that. The reason they held the funds was because I made so many payments in one statement period that they were afraid there were too many "credited payments" out there that could be retracted and thus leave them vulnerable to never receiving those funds. If they give me the credit, and I then retract the payment, they're screwed. It would not have occurred to me to do this to my credit card nor anyone I do business with. I value my credit and I don't want to screw it up. They know this and so they leverage their power in insidious ways. Meanwhile, they are making money off my $3000.

Here's the math:

Line of Credit = $6000
Last Payment = $5000
Second to last payment = $2000
Held Payment = $3000 (16 days and counting)
Pending Transactions = $958
Current balance = -$2,521.27 (**note, NEGATIVE)
Available Credit = 2,043.00

I KNOW! Right?

I would avoid this company at all costs. They give cash back on the card which is the only reason I use it. It's free money! Of course that money comes out of the pockets of the businesses I'm trying to support, but that's another matter. This is not unique to Synchrony Bank, but boy do I hate these guys.

If you can find another credit card company, I sure would.

Synchrony Bank - I have been trying for over a week to notify you that you are calling the wrong number. Your automated system calls me at work ([redacted]) at least once a day asking for someone named [redacted]. I have tried pressing 0 to speak with a live person, but it requires that I verify your customer's ssn and such before I can speak with anyone. I have tried pressing 5 to say that your customer is not available to come to the phone, and the recording says "We will call again." There is no option in your automated call to notify of a wrong number. I looked up your customer service number online and spoke with someone who said I had to be transferred to another department before my number could be removed from your dialer, however a recording came on that said my transfer could not be completed, and hung up. This is a TERRIBLE customer experience. Please remove my work phone number from your automated dialer!

I wanted to build a CD ladder consisting of 5 years @ one a month (60 CD's in all).
When I could not find a box to check for interest disbursement, I called the company and was assured that after opening and funding the CD's, I could call and they would set it up where interest was taken annually and deposited into my online savings account with them.

After opening C.D.'s, I called and was told I would have to call each year on EACH one during the month it was purchased, and could not do it upon opening each CD.

I then asked to speak to a manager, was placed on hold, and then after 5 minutes was hung up on.

I've been a Synchrony customer for a couple years, added an account for my Wife. Good rates but incredibly poor online applications. The online applications are made much more complex than they need to be and the security processes are getting worse.

Synchrony provides banking services - it is not a brokerage for stocks, bonds, etc. But it takes too many steps to do the simplest things. I rarely make changes and I set it up my Schwab account to be able to do all the transfers in and out - it was just easier.

The real issue is their security. Here are a few examples.

While remembering the answers to 5 questions in addition to a login and password is acceptable for initial set-up and maybe for each device, customers are often put through this process every time on the same device.

If a customer fails this the option is then to have it reset. The shame is this process does not work. "press one for the pass code" simply cycles the automated system back to saying "press one for the pass code".

So the next step is to call them. Even when they know there is a problem with their system they don't change their automated response system so as to more quickly provide access to this.

Then the first person contacted could not fix the problem so I was put on "silent hold" for 5 minutes. I'm not a fan of telephone music but some noise/music or periodic announcement would at least tell the customer that Synchrony had not dropped the call.

Instead of asking to "verify" your phone number they'll ask for a phone number to be reached at. These may not be the same. In my case they were but I do not always have my cell phone with me nor am I always in range.

In what I'm hoping to be the end they are Fed Ex'ng a code as they could not use the number on file. No explanation why, it was the phone I was using.

Together my Wife and I are currently "Platinum" customers >$250K but likely not for much longer. Since a simple check balances is not going to take days for Synchrony to handle we'll likely find another bank. Even a "brick and mortar" one would be faster.

I opened an Old Navy account last year. I have never missed a payment and as a matter of fact paid more than minimal due each month. I recently was approved for a home loan and was told to pay off as much of my debt as possible and do not put any new debt out there until I close on my home. I paid my balance down to $0 two months ago and have not used the card. To my surprise as I was about to close on my home Old Navy credit card showed up on my credit report as being recently closed by grantor. What! How is this possible? They didn't even give me any warning! This obviously affected all of my hard work and dropped my credit score. I called Synchrony Bank and the supervisor I spoke with was very rude. She told me that Synchrony will do a credit check once in a while and if my credit score does not meet the requirements they will close the account. I told her if I qualified for a $215,000, home loan I'm pretty sure that the $700 credit limit through Old Navy would not be an issue. My first question was "What about my other credit cards through synchrony?" She didn't have an answer for me on that. Of course she didn't because I have balances on those cards which is making Synchrony money. I flat out told her that the reason they closed my account was due to inactivity! So even though I never missed any payments on this card or any of my credit cards, my credit score dropped instead of going up. This literally almost cost me my home loan which would have left myself and my son homeless! And worst was they gave me no warning! I am furious and once I pay off my other cards through Synchrony Bank I will close them as well. I would never recommend Synchrony Bank to anyone!

Synchrony Bank I have 25 Credit Cards through them form Car Care One, Discount Tire, Pay Pall Cheveron TJMax and the list goes on. All paid every month on time payments. Suddenly I have no online access to View and pay my account monthly Payments. They say they are sending me a letter from the Fraud Department but wont tell me what the letter content is. I then asked for paper statements instead and they denied me those as well. Kept saying wait for letter. What Letter? I feel like the Victim here. I asked what address are they sending me the letter to. Sure enough to my address on file. So I said if I was a fraud why are you sending a letter to my address? Online access denied, so how am I supposed to pay each card, as I can't view my statements to know how much is a payment on each card. Any One?????

Synchrony Bank is the creditor for Chevron. I have a card and they closed the account stating that two (2) payments were returned. I received a letter stating that I signed up for recurring payment (which I did not) and the checking account number on file was not correct. I called cs thinking that it was fraudulent activity going on and the rep said that she would put a fraud alert on my account. However, about a week later, I found that they closed my account and the manager told me that they do not put fraud alerts on their customers' accounts. Secondly, they failed to credit my account $200, stating that the payment was returned. I sent proof that the payment cleared but they will not credit my account; they have reported to the credit agencies that my account has been closed. Customer service is horrible!!!! I have reported them to cfpb; I would suggest that anyone having problems with this creditor does the same; they are a wonderful resource.

Iv delt with synchrony bank for years, soley for the purpose that I like the products ashley furniture provides. EVERY time I need to call about something that has been messed up on their end it is a HUGE waste of time. It is always atleast a 30-45 min conversation for simple fixes. This past month I had to call 3 times over the span of the month becuase each time they said they corrected the issue they did not.... the issue was me getting a bill. I cannot pay my bill if I dont get one. I am extremely fed up with dealing with this service. I do not want to have to stop shopping with ashley because of them!

I had to simmer for an hour or two before I decided to write this review. I made the MISTAKE of applying for an amazon store card BEFORE I read the reviews. The problem seemed to stem from synchrony bank and their customer service. I then contacted amazon and told them I meant to sign up for a rewards card, not this one and I addressed my concerns as to why I want to switch it up. They told me i'd have to contact synchrony bank directly. Reluctantly, I agreed. So, after work I called the bank and this girl answered with a nasty attitude almost immediately. I was having a hard time hearing her because I was walking to my car in a crowded parking lot and when I asked her to repeat the question she gave me a huge attitude about it. I work in a corporate call center myself as a manager and I strive for customer service and being attentive on the phone and i'm pretty easy going because I know what people in customer service job types go through on a regular basis. I gave this girl 3 chances to get smart with me before I told her what I thought of them. Her condescending attitude made me feel as if I, a very loyal amazon customer, was inconveniencing her. Never in my life have I ever been so insulted by someone who seemingly did not care when I told her I was upset, which caused me to then tell her what I thought of the bank as a whole. I definitely didn't want to give her or the company the assumption that you can talk to customers any type of way that you like and get away with it. I called amazon immediately after to address that there seems to be some sort of disconnect between them and synchrony because amazon has great customer service. All they told me was that they were going to relay my feedback to them, and I told them i'd be writing a review as well.SYNCHRONY BANK is the problem and they should fire their whole customer service team. I'm glad all the calls are recorded and they use that as a training opportunity. I have no idea if my issue I called about originally will ever get resolved, since the girl seemed to hate her job and everyone else, I doubt she is capable of producing any type of "work." God forbid you have an issue and have to deal with synchrony bank. So disappointed and hurt, it honestly made me consider just cancelling my whole amazon account altogether.

I have been a customer for approximately a year and regularly get charges denied. Local charges, in person, online and I have to call and verify the charges. I had the account locked twice in one day

If I could give this company less than one star I would, I had a card thru them for some furniture I had purchased, with a promotional period with no interest for X amount of months, they didn't tell me hey your time for no interest is closing next month. Then they hit you with a outrageous interest, my balance was per say 130, the next month it was charged with 115 for interest, after giving the it on the other end of the phone my few choice words, I closed my account, and will never EVER do business with these interest rapists again.

customer serive personel are rude, hateful and will not work with a customer. The manager does not seem to have any respect for women. Very upset with this company and will not do business with them again. Big mistakeGE Bank. Your customers are not happy with Synchrony Bank. DO NOT US THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH THE CUSTOMER ON A SETTLEMENT.
