Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

I have been an avid Amazon shopper for a year now, with my Amazon card and have never had any issues with when it was GE financed. Now that Synchrony has taken over it has cause huge problems for me and my family. I went online on Monday 10/21/14 to purchase some items for my daughter who is expecting a baby, and I ordered a few items worth no more than $60.00. Got an email saying my payment was denied, I have only missed one payment in a year by two days and have paid off my balances. Come to find out after I call and the lady was really rude that my credit limit was decreased by $100.00. I was totally shocked! I said why? She said you will get a letter, got the letter and I must say I think it is a bunch of crap. Decrease my limit because of missing one payment by two day!!! Seriously??? I am apauled by the way I was treated, and feel once I pay it off at this point I will not use it again. It is a shame the way people are being treated with this new bank taking over, she stated it is not Synchrony's decision to decrease these limits whos is it? I was really hoping to continue using it with auto ship methods for my Grand baby guess not.

I was forced to have an account with this bank.
Aspen Dental was the mayor collector of the loan.
Didn't asked for it.
Back on that day was approved instantly.
The credit approved plus taxes plus interest was divided by the yeas ( month length of the loan )
The monthly payment was set to be taken from my checking account .
Never ever the payments were late .
The loan went one more year from the time planed.
No answer to this .
My account was closes in good standing with this bank, the day of the last payment (9/10/15)
I got a letter in the mail telling me : "" my account has been closed "". Due to my
credit history.
And they posted their decision on the three mayor credit companies in the USA.
Adding bad points to my credit report , that I've been trying very hard to clear up for the last past ten years after identity theft .
Why they did it ?
My consumer credit protection act/privacy has been broken.
Synchrony is by far the worst bank I have dealt with. The customer service is appalling. Expect very long wait times for phone calls, no online chat capability, and they don't respond at all to emails with inquiries or requesting help. It's not worth the extra 0.20% you might get in interest.

I financed my pet's surgery through Synchrony, and after being assured it was 6 months no interest, I set up automated payments to cover it in five months and forgot about it, thankful it was taken care of. I was surprised to receive a notice of late payment two months after the pay-off, and when I checked my account I found they had been charging me interest the whole time, and now they socked me with late fees. When I assured them it was supposed to be no interest, they said I was wrong, but if I checked with the vendor they would refund the money if the vendor agreed. My vet called to confirm it was no interest, and then they said since the mistake was not caught in time, we had to eat the charges anyway. I never knew a bank could make mistakes and then keep the money if not caught, but I guess that is Synchrony's policy. Absolutely crooked and shameful! My vet issued me a credit (although it was Synchrony's error) and assured me they will reconsider their financing partners for the future. Two days later my Amazon account stopped working. Surprise, it was Synchrony again! The customer support person from the bank had no idea why my Amazon credit had stopped, since everything was current and up to date they had nothing to offer. I have changed my Amazon account to another card and am in the process of going through all my retail cards to cancel any that have a Synchrony connection. The combination of dishonesty and incompetence is a bad business model, and needlessly expensive for consumers.

After 24 years of being a good customer, I run into financial troubles and they decided that those years didn't count. They closed my account. Then, when I can't get back into my on-line account, to make payments on-line, they have also said that the only way to pay them is to pay by check-by-mail or check-by-phone. So sad that this company has decided to throw away their customers like this.

I will not be recommending them to anyone from now on, for ANY card product. EVER. Their reviews on the Revdex.com say it all... 588 Reviews, 549 negative, 4696 customer complaints in 3 years and only 1688 of them resolved... It's too bad the Revdex.com doesn't work with Quality because the Quality of this product deserves a big fat F!

had an issue accessing my account online. They could not resolve this issue. I then requested a paper statement be mailed to me. I did not recieve this statement and had to call back again. Thier customer service barely spoke english and were very hard to understand. I finally spoke with a "manager" he was not helpful and a complete smartass. I closed my account and cannot believe this the company Amazon choose for thier store card. HORRIBLE

Responded to online offer for credit card, was approved and given "Certificate Number" to use temporarily until the physical card arrived in mail. While at store to make purchase, was unable to complete transaction. Called Synchrony Bank and they had no knowledge of the "Certificate Number" nor could they allow any account use prior to physical card arrival that has not arrived. I consider this bait and switch tactic, thus canceled the account promptly. I will not be their customer ever.

Synchrony Bank needs to update their online services, especially the Register/Login service. I have been trying over and over again to register my account online for a month, and I keep getting the same repsonse of errors. This is the worst online service I have experinced. Please try to fix this as soon as possible. I would like to use it, as most people do as well.

I am so sorry that GE Capital allowed these is Synchrony Bank to take over there retail accounts. I was so embarrassed when I went into Belk's to shop and tried paying using by Belk Credit Card and learned that my account had been closed. I paid the account off in October 2014 (owing only $32.00) and they closed it. I am going to have to loose my Walmart Credit Card because it is controlled by them and they are terrible. I will never apply for any credit card if they have anything to do with it. They really should be banned as a bank and financial institution.....................................................Revdex.com they need to be investigated and fined for what they are doing to consumers.

Each month I pay the bill in advance and in the beginning was paying over the amount that was due. I noticed that each month I have been charged $37 or $35 for a late fee. I contacted the Synchrony Bank/Sam's Personal Credit to inform them of this and I was told they would only give me credit for two late fees instead of all three. This is not acceptable being that I have not been late. I also noticed that they increased my credit without my approval. This too is not acceptable.

I made 3 attempts to pay my JC Penney account online. This bank rejected all 3 attempts. Ultimately they finally accepted a phone payment, closed the account and blamed me and my bank. I make many different online payments with no problem until this company. So long Penney and this horrible bank

I spend a lot (business spending). When using American Express, I never had problems. I switched my spending to a BR visa with Synchrony. I am regularly getting charges denied, online, even in a store with card in hand. It's ridiculous. I have had to call 5 times in a year to unlock my account - when I never had to do it with AmEx (similar spending levels).

Each time I call in the CSR tells me if I answer additional questions, they can increase some variable so this won't happen. I hang up, and then it happens again.

Worst customer service experience I have ever had with a company. I went onto their payment portal and utilized their "chat with an agent" feature. I was matched with an agent after a few minutes of waiting. I had two questions/complaints about the financing/payment set up of my mattress purchase:

1. I can't get the bank account information to save to my profile
2. The minimum payment in the portal is $30 lower than what I was told it would be in the store.

Note: I purchased a mattress with an 18 month, 0% interest, financing option.

First issue was solved with two attempts. No problem.

Second issue (I did get rather heated and probably borderline rude at the end). Here's the exact transcript from my conversation for the second issue.

10:15:18 AM : Adam [redacted]: You were provided with 18 months interest free promotion on the account.

10:15:48 AM : Adam [redacted]: A minimum payment is required on the account however, making minimum payment would not payoff the balance in full .

10:16:00 AM : Adam [redacted]: The whole balance needs to be paid by the expiration date.

10:16:04 AM : Christine [redacted]: yes

10:16:10 AM : Christine [redacted]: you're not telling me anything that I don't know.

10:16:34 AM : Christine [redacted]: is there a reason that the minimum monthly payment was set $30 lower on the payment portal than what I was told it would be in store? It seems like a scam to make money.

10:17:48 AM : Adam [redacted]: This is different promotion on the account.

10:18:03 AM : Adam [redacted]: Paying minimum due would not payoff the balance in full.

10:18:18 AM : Adam [redacted]: Balance must be paid in full on or before expiration date to avoid interest charges. If balance is not paid in full by expiration date,
deferred interest is billed to the account.

10:18:35 AM : Christine [redacted]: yes, I heard that when I purchased and read it just now when you said it the first time

10:19:26 AM : Christine [redacted]: however, I'd like you to answer my question: why was the minimum payment set at $52. It seems like you're setting up customers to deliberately NOT pay off the balance in full by setting a minimum monthly payment which, when paid over 18 months, does not total the full amount.

10:22:51 AM : Christine [redacted]: I understand that the full amount needs to be paid by the expiration date, and it will be. It would just be nice to know that I'm financing with a company that values their customers and doesn't try to scam them into making money for their company. I will pay off this balance in full, through the online portal. Then I will be making formal reviews on this experience with the Revdex.com and other guideline and rating organizations.

Thank you for helping me get the payment and bank information set.

10:23:33 AM : Adam [redacted]: As said earlier, we offer various promotions on the account. These promotions vary based on the terms provided while making the purchase.

10:24:15 AM : Christine [redacted]: You cannot tell me that setting my payment amount lower is a promotion. In no way does a $52 per month payment benefit me in the long run. It simply means, had I not been paying attention, that I would be paying additional charges.

10:24:19 AM : Christine [redacted]: Thank you for your time.

10:24:49 AM : Adam [redacted]: We provide promotions which are paid when you make minimum payments each month and we also provide promotions where a minimum payment is required however,
you can make payments based on your convenience anytime. You can make huge payments any time when you the funds.

10:25:34 AM : Adam [redacted]: If you need to know why the minimum due was reduced, I would request you to contact the doctor's office--as the provide the promotion and apply it on the account.

10:26:39 AM : Adam [redacted]: As they provide the promotion and apply it on the account.

10:27:13 AM : Christine [redacted]: This was a mattress purchase, not a doctor's visit.

My issue was not resolved. I will be paying this off each month so that it pays off completely on/before the 18 months expire, but with no help from this company.

Wish I had checked Revdex.com first. If I had would not have done business with this bank. It took me three weeks to open the acct, after three tries. Recently went to add additional $ and I have gotten nothing but roadblocks. You would think it would be much easier than this. I only wonder what it will be like when I try to withdraw.
They don't deserve anyone's business.

I have three cards issued by this bank. I have belks, amazon and walmart. I have never been late on ANY if the cards. I have requested an increase from Walmart numerous times and I'm always denied. Don't waste your time. They will NEVER INCREASE!

Their website consistently denies me access to my account saying I am using the wrong login credentials.

It's frustrating constantly having to reset my password because for some reason their system doesn't recognize my login creds.

I found that getting the credit was easy, but the customer service after is very poor. The website stated that I could use this card at other retailers that did business with Synchrony Bank, so I selected on from the list. I called twice to make sure that the card could be used for the retailer that I selected, before I talked with the second retailer. I now have tried to place an order and was told that this card can't be used (third call). This is extremely embarrassing and I now have to pay a fee to cancel the order or apply for yet another Synchrony card...Nice scam!!!

Synchrony bank started the installation of a new login for online accounts ( of course the bank is only an online bank so...). This started June 10th, it is now June 18th and the process is still continuing. For an online bank the modification of a feature on the website at best should be seamless, this transition is the worst I have seen in years. I have to call, wait for ten minutes or more just to find out if my money is still there.
I hope that they resolve the issue soon.

Really this bank needs some over seeing of the financial department,as there billing is not good.

I applied for the Wal-mart credit on 11/30 and was approved. I was offered the choice to shop online at the time but declined. Three days later I decided to Xmas shop. I contacted credit services and was told I had to wait for a pass code. Phoned back with the code and NO one knew what I was talking about. I received a letter from Synchrony on 12/10/14 to please call. When I phoned I was asked why I was calling. The letter gave no reason and customer service had no idea. On 12/11 I received the card but was unable to activate it. I phoned customer service, it took 10 minutes to get past the automated system. When I finally reached a human I was transferred to "activation". I put the call on speaker in my office and continued the job I get paid for. After an hour of bad music I hung up and phoned again. This time CS claimed to have activated the card. I go to walmart.com/credit to register the card and add my banking information for bill payments, the message says the card is not eligible and to call CS. The Walmart CS was kind but could not help. After holding for 10 minutes she was able to get me a representative from the Synchrony. Now I'm told that the call I was told to make on 12/3/14 started a fraud investigation! I am asked to verify the code and all the information on my application. Then I'm told I have to call back during business hours from my home phone. Mind you now I've burned 1000 calories on this with NO shopping. I have cards from Discover It to Neiman Marcus and have NEVER had to phone back from home. I requested that the account be closed. This they were able to do for me. Yikes! I'm sure I dodged a bullet with these people. Now I must make sure they are not the undercover backer of any of my other cards!

Synchrony Bank openly admits to a faulty website and that it has impacted customers' ability to access their accounts and pay bills, yet they regularly charge one of the highest late fees despite the customer contacting about the problems. All fees have been reversed after 4 months of disputing this with them, even though they admit the problems were related to their website. My account was paid in full, within the promotional period, yet I still received an interest charge.

This is Fraud if they knowingly have technical issue, but still charge the customers when it is their error.

I have a transcript of the online chat where the agent admitted to the known technical issues and documenting the fraud mentioned above!
