Response:
Dear [redacted],We received notice of a consumer complaint filed against Domains By Proxy (“DBP”) regarding [redacted]. DBP provides a private registration service that allows its customers to register domain names without listing their contact information in the public WHOIS database. Since DBP is listed as the registrant of the domain name, it may appear that DBP operates or has an interest in the domain name or website. That is not the case; DBP is neither a domain name registrar, nor a hosting provider and has no control over website content. Therefore, as the complaint is actually against our customer, we request that you withdraw the current complaint and file a new one against [redacted].As Domains By Proxy does not have the ability to remove content from any website for which we provide our proxy service, you will need to contact the hosting provider. Generally the operators of the DNS name servers and the hosting providers are the same. For your convenience, we have listed the hosting provider below:
[redacted], Inc.
abuse@[redacted].com
In addition to contacting the hosting provider, you may send your complaint directly to the customer at: [redacted]@domainsbyproxy.com. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the customer will reply, but this is yet another option for you to pursue.
Very truly yours,
Lisa V.

Response:
DBP, which is owned by GoDaddy founder [redacted], can not offer domain privacy services that negate their responsibility for managing unsolicited, unwanted, unwelcome abuse from domains owners who violate DBP's TOU!The fact that "[redacted]" (domain) is a private registration does not absolve DBP of their responsibility when their customer fails to abide by DBP's TOU! If "[redacted]" has listed DBP as their administrative and technical contact,it is then incumbent on DBP to either notify the customer or rescind the domain! *. [redacted]

Review: I registered several domain names with GoDaddy, who utilizes Domains by Proxy (DBP) for DNS registration. The information that I provided to GoDaddy during my registration of my reef-road.com domain name was all correct at the time of registration on 10/29/2012. I am attempting to transfer the domain name to a new owner. In order to complete the transfer I am required to request a transfer authorization code through GoDaddy, and they are to have Domains By Proxy email me the code. Domains By Proxy, for some unknown reason that is no fault of mine, has my wrong e-mail on file and will not update my account profile with the correct e-mail address so that I can receive my authorization code. The email and company name that they have on file for me are from 7 years ago and no longer in existence. I have been trading e-mails with DBP for 3 days now, and each time I provide them with the latest requested information, they then require new information. The only phone number that DBP publishes for customer service is actually answered by GoDaddy, but GoDaddy says that they will not help me and that I have to communicate with DBP only be e-mail.Desired Settlement: I expect a phone call from DBP today at [redacted], and that my account will be updated with the correct information within 12 hours.

Dear [redacted],
We have reviewed this matter and our records indicate that [redacted]’s Email Update Request was successfully completed on April 2, 2014.
Our policies require documentation from requestors to ensure that we are providing access to the correct party.
Mr. [redacted] can now retrieve the necessary login information through our online tool to gain access to the account, cancel our private registration service and begin the transfer process with GoDaddy.
Since Mr. [redacted] now has the ability to gain access to the DBP customer account, we now consider this matter resolved.

I've made every effort to resolve the matter with very little success.
First, I contacted [redacted]. I was informed and verified that my company's information is correct in their database and I was instructed to contact [redacted].
Second, I contacted [redacted] Support. I was informed and verified that my company's information is correct in their database and I was instructed to contact the privacy register, Domain By Proxy.
Domain by Proxy does not list a number on their website, but I obtain one from it's Revdex.com profile. So thirdly, I called them and was instructed to submit a change of email request via their web form. I did so while even including all the contact info on my domain.
I received an email from domain by proxy requesting government id's and other private data. I responded to that email refusing to send that kind of private information to a 4th party company. Instead I requested that they authenticate me via any of the contact information listed on the account except the email address that they have wrong.
They sent an email trying to justify why they needed my private information. Finally, I responded to Domain By Proxy email once again which in this email I suggested again to contact via the information on file to authenticate me and that it is unlawfully to send email belonging to us ([redacted]) to unaffiliated domain ([redacted]). [redacted] is a US company and [redacted] belongs to someone who resides in AU.
This is an international problem that our legal team is prepared to file a federal lawsuit for, and a civil lawsuit for not fully delivering the services due.
We have already filed a complaint with ICann.
WHOIS information: [redacted] | [redacted]Desired Settlement: Simply STOP SENDING our emails to [redacted] and instead properly send to [redacted]"!!
We're also expecting this company's Revdex.com rating to decrease from A+.

Review: This service was added to an order through [redacted] but now I am unable to remove it. I never wanted it to begin with. I have tried repeatedly to contact them asking them to provide me access to my account so I can disable it, but I never hear back from them. Trying to communicate with them is like a black hole. Meanwhile, my domain is being held hostage by this company forcing me to continue to pay them for something I don't want because there is no way to remove it.Desired Settlement: I want this fraud/scam cancelled and removed from my web domain registration.

We now consider this matter resolved. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
They claimed my whois information was incorrect and charged me $20. My whois information was correct. They have yet to give me a refund.
Review: I am trying to cancel my services with them. I have sent in paperwork for verification and they processed some of the domains but not all. I have called them, emailed them and now they are holding my property hostage. I sent in corporate paperwork, my license and military ID to them, against my better wishes since I am not sure of their retention policies. I have the credit card with the the original purchase of the domain but they still refuse to cease their service. They are slow with email and continually drag their feet even though I have the right for my domain. The paperwork has been verified so what is their problem. They even admit it is mine but .....but what? What is the problem...they cannot say.Desired Settlement: Release my domain from their service so I can alter the account how I desire. I want them to verify that they will destroy all paperwork I sent them. My privacy is in the hands of these people that are holding my property hostage. I do not trust their business practices.

Response:
Dear [redacted],
Thank you for contacting us regarding Revdex.com Complaint number [redacted].
As you know, Domains By Proxy provides a privacy service for domain name registrations so that individuals or companies can register domain names without placing their personal contact information on public record (the WHOIS database).
Each customer is issued a customer account at our website, [redacted], where they can login and manage the privacy of the domain names. Management includes updating contact information, selecting email preferences, and if they wish, canceling the privacy service. We require that the privacy service be canceled from within the account to restrict the action to only the true registrant of the domain name.
It is clearly stated in the Domain Name Proxy Agreement that it is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the contact information for the account is always valid and as up to date as possible. If the customer loses their login information, we have an online tool that they can use to retrieve that information and still access their account. This online tool is designed to only work with the email address that we have on file for that account. As such, it's critical that the customer maintain valid information on their account.
On August 29, 2013 we were contacted by Mr. [redacted] via our online Email Update Request submission form seeking assistance with updating the email address on his DBP customer accounts so he could retrieve his DBP customer account login information to gain access to the accounts. We responded to him that same day requesting a copy of government-issued business ID for the account holder so we could process the request. On August 30, 2013, Mr. [redacted] submitted a copy of government-issued business ID for the company listed as the account holder, we in turn processed his Email Update Request and notified Mr. [redacted] the same day that his Email Update Request was successfully processed.
Since it appears that Mr. [redacted] has been able to gain access to his DBP customer accounts and cancel private registration for the domain names in question since filing this complaint we now consider this matter resolved.
With regards to the destroying the paperwork that Mr. [redacted] submitted to have his Email Update Request processed, unfortunately, we are unable to destroy it, as we are required to maintain it on our secure servers to comply with our legal obligations. Our privacy policy may be viewed here: [redacted]

Review: Filed an earlier complaint against this company on 1/12/16, and am however still receiving unwanted, unsolicited unwelcome, uninvited, unrequested, unsought, abuse, advertizing "tedcruz.org" (domain), from the same source for over 7 months. Have reported each and every one to the respective ISP ([email protected]) and the registrars at "godaddy.com" and "[email protected]". Also have a filed complaint with ICANN, which is pending.Desired Settlement: Stop the harassment, it does not help cruz whatsoever and absolutely serves no purpose!
Review: There is no way to unsubscribe from their service. I have provided the requested information to no avail. They provide no information and make you jump through many unnecessary hoops to cancel the service, only to not cancel on a technicality. The information provided was correct, yet those chose to lock out the account, and I have had no luck in regaining access.Desired Settlement: I need to be able to transfer our school's PTA site to an account that is held by the PTA rather than myself. It would be great if [redacted] could help.

Dear Dispute Resolution Consultant,

Review: I have a [redacted] domain account. As an option offered to me upon signing up, I chose to hide my personal information for security and to put up another barrier to ID theft etc.. [redacted] outsources this security to a company called Domains by Proxy, but I was not informed of that at the time I signed up. I signed up for the [redacted] account and things went well for the terms of service. Then, late last year (2014) I decided that I wanted to change my service to a different registrar. I was informed by [redacted] that I needed to contact Domains by Proxy to take the hold off off of my account privacy for me to move forward with changing registrars and setting up my web site, even though I had never heard of Domains by Proxy up to that point, and had never signed anything giving them the right to control my domain in any way. I was told by [redacted] that I would not be able to set up the new web site until Domains by Proxy released a hold they had on my account for privacy reasons (again - I never agreed to Domains by Proxy having this control; my agreements were/are with [redacted]). As required, I contacted Domains By Proxy and was given a laundry list of documents that they needed for me to send them in order for them to release my account. These documents were NOT needed for the privacy to be started. I sent them the documents they asked for. Then they asked for another document that was not originally asked for, a photo of a government ID. Being that such a request is very odd and not included with the original set of documents, I was cautious. Sending a photo of a government issued identification in this day and age of rampant ID theft to a company I have no dealings with nor have a way of being sure they are not a scam or being impersonated by a scammer is highly questionable. I debated as to sending it. Then they emailed me again and told me the matter was closed because too much time had elapsed, a time limit they did NOT make me aware of until it was too late. I was told that I could start the whole process over again if I would like. Needless to say, I WOULD NOT LIKE!!! In the mean time, I have no web site up for my web based business. Additionally, I have had to pay [redacted] for services that I have already paid for with another registrar because if I do not get my domain transferred before the [redacted] services expire (which is not possible to do until the privacy issue is rectified), then they will drop me as a client and, therefore, the hold I have on the domain name. I will then need to re-register my domain name with the possibility that another entity buying it before I could re-register it - possibly [redacted] or Domains by Proxy - in order to sell it back to me at a inflated price. The terms were: I either pay or run the possibility of losing my domain as well as the 15 years of brand recognition that goes along with it. At this point my internet based company is nothing less than being held hostage buy a company that I never signed up for. Along with that, the requests they are making for the documents supposedly needed to facilitate the subsequent release of my registered and paid in full domain, although previously afforded to them, are being asked for again along with an unreasonable and risky (as per security and ID theft) demand that I send a photo of my personal. identification.Desired Settlement: 1) I would like my domain released so I can rebuild the website.
2) Reimbursement of my costs of having to re-register my domain name with [redacted].
3) Reimbursement for the months already paid for with the other registrar that I was not able to use
4) Reimbursement for the money lost by my company for not having the website up (apx $30,000.00)
5) A change in the way they do business in that the documents should be asked for to start the privacy and then upon a customer's desire to change registrars only verified by phone for instant release when requested. A photo of a government identification is not a reasonable request from a company that deals in privacy. The risk of interception and the ramifications of such a breach of privacy should be clear and apparent to a company that deals in privacy.

Review: Similar to other customers I know, I purchased private registration for some domain names through [redacted] (and in this case their subsidiary, Domains by Proxy) years ago and have been unable to cancel it for more than a year now. The customer service department deliberately creates obstacles for customers, requiring information they know you don't have in order to keep you locked into their services. As soon as you supply one form of ID they ask for another, and then another, and then another. They do not accept standard forms of gov't-issued organization ID. [redacted] will do anything to trap customers in a permanent stranglehold, so they can continue to extract fees for doing nothing.
I can provide Domains by Proxy emails substantiating these claims.Desired Settlement: Domains by Proxy needs to fulfill my long-standing request to cancel my registration and release the organization I represent from the existing contract/arrangement/plan.

Response:
Dear [redacted], Domains By Proxy was contacted by [redacted] asking for assistance in updating the account so that he could gain access and cancel the privacy service. As he is not listed as the owner of the account, nor the registrant of the domain name at issue, we asked that he provide not only photo ID for himself, but also for business ID for the company listed as the actual registrant/account holder from our acceptable list. Our policies require such documentation to ensure that we are providing access to the correct party. While we were trying to contact our current customer to see if we could find a way to resolve the situation for both parties, our customer was able to contact the Mr. [redacted] directly. Our office was copied in the email our customer sent to Mr. [redacted]. Since our customer and Mr. [redacted] have been in contact with each other, it is up to our customer if they would like to provide Mr. [redacted] with the necessary login information to gain access to the account so privacy can be cancelled. Our email update process is a last resort process to help our customers gain access to their account when they are unable to retrieve their login information through our online tool. Since the email address on the account is active and our customer has access to the email address on the account to use our online account retrieval tool, we consider this matter resolved. All we can recommend is Mr. [redacted] work with our customer directly to receive the necessary login information gain access to the account so privacy can be cancelled.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
[Provide details of why you are not satisfied with this resolution.]
Regards,
The matter is not resolved. We are still unable to transfer out of Domains by Proxy, for purposes of registering domain name elsewhere. DBP has sent login info to the name on the DBP account, Sandy Smiroldo, our former website manager. She forwarded the email to me. The login info she forwarded does not provide us access, and it is impossible to complete the task without access. There is no active link on their "Information to Reset" email she forwarded that would allow access." DBP continues to send us through a circular process that yields no results.
Business
Response:
Dear [redacted] The reason why [redacted] is unable to retrieve the necessary DBP customer account login directly is because he is not the individual listed on the account. Also, we are not responsible for any miscommunication between the account holder and Mr. [redacted] with regards to relaying of login information. In addition, the account holder has not contacted us with an issue of them not being able to gain access to the account. All we can recommend is Mr. [redacted] work with the account holder directly to receive the necessary login information gain access to the account so privacy can be cancelled. If account holder is unable to gain access to their account while working with Mr. [redacted], we recommend that Mr. [redacted] advises the account holder to contact us directly for assistance with gaining access to the account.
Review: They are holding my credit card and domains hostage and won't let me log into their scam site.Desired Settlement: Release my domains and stop charging me for services I never signed up for.
This business is a total scam set up owned by [redacted]. I've spent hrs. on the phone with [redacted] trying to remove and thus not be charged for, "private registration" for my [redacted] domains. From the looks by the other reviews, it would seem I'm not alone. When you buy a domain from [redacted] it's cheap enough that you don't notice they charge you for private registration. By them charging you for this they begin to charge you for this unneeded service every renewal. To removed this service, [redacted] sends you to this time waster of a website to do so, even though it is owned by them. Unfortunately I no longer know my c
r and of course, I can't login. The operator at [redacted] tells me that they can not contact them and the only way I can contact them, is through email that they don't respond to. The last option is to submit my drivers license to prove my identity. This is ridiculous!! I don't want some random website with my ID!! This company is owned by [redacted]!!! They've made this as hard as they can to remove this private registration, that I never signed up for to begin with!!! It must be quite lucrative to unknowingly charge thousands of people who just give up after they've wasted a bunch of time on this. I've been wanting to move my domains from these crooks for years but I can't even do that until I can login to their scam site!!!
This business tracks website ownership, and sends out unwanted spam to me constantly. The names at the bottom of the emails are non existant persons (as far as my research has found) and despite numerous requests to stop sending me unwanted emails, they continue to do so. On January 29, 2014, I received 7 unwanted emails regarding the availability of the domain "[redacted]".
This company operates without regard to any business professionalism.
Review: I registered a domain with GoDaddy and asked for "private registration."Now, I want to move my domain to a better provider and I cannot because first I must log in to a Domains by Proxy account using login information that I was never given.Because I don't have any login info, I tried to get it via their "Forgot Login" page, but it is asking me for a variety of documents I don't have, including incorporation docs that my state doesn't issue (FL).I've spoken to their phone support and they told me the only way to get this fixed is via the same process ("Forgot Login") that doesn't work.Desired Settlement: I want them to unlock my domain and/or give me the login information to do so myself.

We are in receipt of your complaint from Ms. [redacted]. Please be advised that Domains By Proxy (“DBP”) provides a private registration service that allows customers of our affiliate registrars to register domain names without listing their contact information in the public WHOIS database. Since DBP is listed as the registrant of the domain name, it may appear that DBP operates or has an interest in the domain name or website. That is not the case; DBP is neither a domain name registrar, nor a hosting provider and has no control over website content. However, we do have a process in place for individuals to file a claim against domain names utilizing our private registration service and we recommend that Ms. [redacted] file a claim against [redacted] so we can investigate the issue. Ms. [redacted] can file a claim via the online form, accessible by clicking the File A Claim button on the homepage of DomainsByProxy.com. Once we receive Mr. [redacted]'s claim we will investigate the issue and respond to her with options to possibly resolve the issue and/or provide any recommendations that she can pursue to resolve the issue.
Review: I have several domains under registrant protection with Domain By Proxy for several years.
When I have decided to cancel domain I was told I need to cancel Protection by Domains By Proxy.
This process involves online cancellation request submission. So I did. I was sent an email requesting my photo ID, so I sent it back. I was sent another email requesting my company TAX information, so I did. I was then told that provided information doesn't match their records, I have updated it on May 19. Since then DomainsByProxy haven't contacted me. There are no other meant to get in touch with them. All phones they display on their site is of [redacted] reps. decline any assistance. At the moment I can't cancel protected domains and have to pay premium.Desired Settlement: I want somebody to contact me and resolve the issue.

Review: Several years ago, [redacted] made it very easy to pay for and sign up for Domains by Proxy's privacy service. I have never been given access to my accounts. Now that I want access to my account they need a drivers license and business documents. How is it that [redacted] can verify who I am but will not let me opt out of paying for domains by proxy service. I do not see how this is legal.Desired Settlement: Give me access to all of my domains by proxy accounts.
