Anthony & Sylvan Pools Reviews (111)

I've given Anthony Sylvan not 1 chance but 2 chances to make good, but their service department is terrible! I put out thousands of dollars to have my pool system updated and it is now going on 2 months and the work is not complete. We have had a few rainy days and I continue to be pushed to the back of the line. I might be lucky if this work is complete before the end of the summer. To many old men working in that office. They have no room for compromise or bend. This has to change for Anthony Sylvan. They are giving the company a bad name. Come on!! You are suppose to be the leaders in the industry, but you are acting like the low man. I don't know that I will be calling them when my husband and I decide to do or new coping, tile and surfacing. Some one else will get my business!

We have been working with the [redacted] to resolve their
issues and are happy to say they are now satisfied.

Anthony and sylvan pools has reached out to me and are trying to correct the problems.
The pool issues are not resolved, but they are making a attempt to correct them.

PLEASE READ HOW SYLVAN TREATS LONG TIME CUSTOMERS. I bought two pools from them. Spent thousands and thousands of dollars during the last 20 years. After the last email from them (below) Owen S[redacted] called me and said "Sylvan doesn't want to do business with you". I can't believe they put this response in writing and they told me to go away on the phone. That's not all. I recently had to sent them a letter to put me on their do not contact list. Why? For some unknown reason Owen calls my fiancé and starts harassing her. Please do your homework before doing business here. Th emails in reverse chronological order:

Hi Mr. B[redacted],
Thank you very much for taking the time to speak with me, this evening. Per our conversation, I will be looking into potential options to assist with your pool closing and I appreciate your desire to pay for the service. As we discussed, I have Replied All to your email, however, following this email reply, you and I have agreed to work together one-on-one to try to figure out positive next steps to address your concerns.
I look forward to following up with you early next week via phone, as soon as I have potential next steps to discuss.
Very Sincerely,
Owen S[redacted]

I have bought two Anthony Sylvan pools. My first in Robbinsville NJ where I lived for approximately 8 years. I loved my pool and received a number of coupons for supplies due to my referrals.
In 2008 I purchased my second pool in Wrightstown, PA. I have replaced the filter, pumps, and last summer the heater with your company. The service was never at the same level as in NJ, but it was acceptable. Last summer I reported my chlorinator wasn't working and an algae issue resulted. A couple of times a technician came out to remedy the situation. My favorite time was when I called servicing in Doylestown and the women reported to me the chlorinator was turned off. I think I know the difference between on and off, I however gave the benefit of the doubt. Or course I had to call back. There was even an attempt to rebuild the chlorinator but that didn't work. So I spent three months in 2015 scrubbing the walls weekly. No matter how much chlorine I put into the floating devices, it never worked. I have a big pool. I did spend a couple of grand on a new heater that year.
So now we come to 2016. Early on I reported the chlorinator isn't working as the chlorine never dissipated. Technicians came out and, well the short story is same chlorinator, same problem. Now it's June and the algae is back. So aggravated with a lack of success of finding a remedy I send mean comments to your Facebook, to Yelp, to anyone I could complain. Also, I had been in therapy for 6 months for herniated discs in my back. Brushing the pool every week didn't help.
Then, Owen S[redacted] comes into help. I could tell immediately this was a person who was angry. He didn't like my posted comments. I explained after two years I was tired of the same problem. His major thrust was to remove my comments from public view which I promptly obliged. After going back and forth I for almost a month I finally got my chlorinator replaced at no cost and had my pool opening fee refunded. Actually it was charged to me again in error and after contacting Owen it was resolved. Another simple thing that wasn't done correctly or perhaps it was on purpose and maybe I wouldn't notice. You'd think credit and debit is simple to understand and execute.
Please keep in mind that starting the summer of 2015 I was in intense physical therapy for my back. For two summers I had to brush the pool because of a poor chlorinator. Being a customer for over 20 years I never ever complained until last year. I had to go to extreme measures to get my small problem fixed. It was bizarre. You service department made me think I was crazy as I was told my chlorinator was operating but the chlorine wasn't dissolving. And every weekend, I would scrub the pool. At the end Owen sends me the letter below. My take is we are shaking hands goodbye to "the chlorinator problem" and he would do my closing for free. I admit never reading it as he intended which was after two years we resolved your problem now go f--- yourself.
I always close mid to late October so when no one came on the date the appointment was made I assumed they just forgot again. This has happened in the past and what I alluded to in the beginning of this letter. So I contacted Owen as he instructed me to do with any future problems and he said basically get out and stay out.
I've called others to close my pool and they are obviously booked so my pool is still opened. Oh, the day the chlorinator was fixed was the last day my almost new heater worked. I didn't realize this until I turned on the hot tub on Labor Day weekend.
So I plead for your assistance. Owen has an obvious vendetta against me. Or perhaps this is your policy of treating long term costum

My pool was built by Anthony & Sylvan 25-30 years ago when I found out that they were the best in the field. So when it was time to renovate my pool, I had them again. They did the retiling and recoping. Everything was nice. The sales rep came to the house and explained everything in detail - the time frame, the cost involved - and we signed up on the spot. The renovation made my pool look more up-to-date. It looks like a new pool and very modern in appearance.

Anthony & Sylvan put in our swimming pool. They did a very good job and they were very professional.

Review: I left a deposit of $ 3500.00 with [redacted] a salesperson with Anthony/Sylvan pools in Fairfield nj Sept 2013. Pool was set to be put in Nov 2013 but I was let go from my job.The salesperson was emailed and told this. At no point was I ever told that I would not be getting my entire deposit back so when I requested the refund which took almost 2 months to receive I was shocked to find out that they charged me $ 1848.00 for permits for work on my house. I have spoken with my attorney and he suggested I put a complaint in with you before we take legal action. I understand that I may have had some type of penalty but not 50% of my deposit! that is criminal and I would like some help in this matter. I also did my research and Fairfield said they never recieved a penny from them towards any permits. They also never sent me any bill or back up to what they are charging me for.Desired Settlement: I would like the blance of $1848.00 returned to me and I would like to see a bill of what they are charging me for

[redacted] informed us in November 2013 that he wished to cancel his pool project. We refunded his deposit less actual costs incurred. We have since provided [redacted] with copies of the documents he requested, explaining the deductions. We have also left him a message asking him to call us to discuss. We have not heard back from him as of yet.

During this process, it came to our attention that the permit fee was incorrectly recorded in our internal records as $638 (vs. the actual fee of $538). We are processing an additional refund to Mr.

Vassallo this week in the amount of $100.00 (which will bring the total refund to $1,782). Attached is a copy of the correspondence sent to [redacted].

Review: I purchase a home, in the home there was a swimming pool. Went I ask the question how old the pool was and if still under warranty the old owner inform me that the warrantee is transferable to the new owner according to their contract. I when thru the contract and according to what I read they were correct. So a couple on months pass by and I call the nearest office of Anthony & Sylvan to ask about some issue with the pool and about the warranty. They call me and explain about the issue I had, I understood that issue might not be covert under the warranty. Went ask how to transfer the warranty I was told they will call me back about that letter on. I waited and fallows up a couple of time but the same. I finally decided to demand to speak with someone. Customer service call me back, I explain I have been waiting at least about 4 to 5 month and I have been getting the run around. Finally a nice lady calls me. I explain why I was calling and she was kind enough to let me know she will call with an answer soon. A couple of days later she call me and explain that the supervisor informs her that they were not honoring the warranty because I should have been done prior to closing of the purchase of the home. I inform her that according to the warranty I have there was nothing specifying or let along mentioning anything on that behalf. She mentions she understands my frustration but that was the answer her supervisor told her. His name was [redacted] form the [redacted] office.Desired Settlement: Honor the warranty terms as disclose. Don’t add anything that was not agreed prior to the sale. Don’t add to something that was not there before and honor what it was agree from the contract.

Regards,

My wife and I contracted with Anthony & Sylvan Pools and are disappointed in trying to resolve a problem with a storm water drain.
Throughout the building process there were issues, too many to list here. The biggest and recurring problem was the continued miscommunications between the Project Manager, Schedulers and Sub-Contractors.
Because there was no pre-construction meeting with our municipal zoning officer (as required), there was a complete misunderstanding by Anthony & Sylvan of what was required for storm water management. As a result of the misunderstanding we have an ugly 2 inch drain on the side of our pool that is too low. To keep the pool working properly we had to plug the drain. Plug courtesy of Anthony & Sylvan at our Indoctrination. The drain should have been out the backside of the skimmers in the overflow port.
If the drain would be unplugged, the water level would be too low for the skimmer and pump to function properly. To date, we do not have an approved occupancy permit because the drain is plugged. The drain must remain open in order to meet the required code. Because of the delay now the township has added a requirement to install a pit for the storm water management.
We have tried to explain that the drain is too low to the Project Manager and Construction Manager. Currently they have offered a cover with holes similar to a shower drain. This would be placed over the 2 inch hole. This will still allow the water to drain to the level where the skimmer and pump will not function properly. They have not replied to our repeated explanation that the water level will be too low.
Since we have had problems throughout our build, we have withheld the final $2400 payment until the job is completed and we have an approved occupancy permit. Anthony & Sylvan's Construction Manager has held off on allowing the installation of our pool cover because of the outstanding balance. He also threatened to send us to a collection agency and suspend our warranty.
We hope that they work with us and resolve the issue soon.

Review: My wife and I searched long and hard for a pool company. We had 7 different companies give estimates, we reviewed them carefully. We choose A/S because the salesman, [redacted] offered us a things for free that the other pool company's were charging for. We were tno extra cost for saltwater system we were told if it took 1 day or 2 days to excavate there would be no additional fees. In the end the final decision to go with A/S was made because [redacted] said they would install future plumbing for water features that we not currently within our budget. He made it sound like we would be able to add things like waterfalls or slides and deck jets later as our budget allowed. And all of this was included free of charge. We signed contracts and it's been all down hill from there. We have been billed over $5k so far for items that supposedly "we're included". All the things we were told turned out to be bold face lies. Currently there trying to get out of paying the plumbers for the future water features. We paid the deposit and signed contracts in August of 2013 we were told the pool construction would begin in October or November 2013-- today's date is May 14th 2014 our yard is destroyed and they just installed the gunite last week. The pool is maybe 40% completed after signing contracts 9 months ago. This has been and still is a horrible experience. The worst part of all of this is I have every conversation recorded with audio proving I was lied to, but they don't want to hear it.Desired Settlement: I expect them to stand by what there salesman told us and refund our money.

Review: Our pool was plastered May 31 and started up June 3. The technicians who came to our home did not have any of the promised items regarding to our pool indoctrination. We should have received a water test kit, maintenance kit, and ‘vacless’ main drain safety system. Because water testing is crucial for new plaster, I was forced to purchase a test kit from the Anthony & Sylvan retail store for $25.99. We should not have had to purchase this! Also, two weeks in the pool now needs to be vacuumed. Without the maintenance kit which includes a vacuum head, we will be forced to purchase this, as well. Again, this has already been paid for! Addtionally, we should have received a handrail, for which an extra $410 was paid last year and had been in our contract since last year. I was told by the technicians that they “do not carry this stuff around anymore” and that we would be receiving them shortly. As of today, June 18, we have yet to hear anything regarding a timeframe for these items. Most importantly, the ‘vacless’ pump safety system needs to be in place before we can pass the [redacted] County inspection.

On multiple occasions we have attempted contact via phone and/or email with our project manager, service department in [redacted], and the construction department in [redacted], in an attempt to solve these problems, all to no avail. Each office believes it to be someone else’s responsibility to accommodate our needs and fulfill their contract. Bottom line: we have spent over $30,000 for a pool that, while beautiful, is not finished to the contract that both we and Anthony & Sylvan ratified.Desired Settlement: To summarize we require:

-Maintenance kit

-Water test kit

-Handrail

-‘Vacless’ pump safety system

-$250 gift card ( As promised in writing by our project manager)--

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. Our concerns have been addressed and we are waiting resolution on one matter at this time.

Regards,

I heard about Anthony & Sylvan through advertising. I ended up going with them because they followed up with me. They weren't high pressure too. The salesman who came here was wonderful. He obviously was in the business for a long time in the swimming pool industry so I could tell he knew what he was talking about. He didn't try to sell me anything other than what I wanted but he was very good and thorough on what I wanted to have done. He was so impressive that I signed the contract that night. The scheduler of Anthony & Sylvan was in contact with me most of the time to let me know what to expect. And the expectations that she set were always right on time. They replastered the whole interior and did fix a few of the tiles, too. The finish of it is great. The feeling of the plaster was very nice and soft on your feet. It wasn't slippery and hard. It looks like a brand new pool now. They did an excellent job.

We have always had a pool. We are repeat customers because we moved and we went again with Anthony & Sylvan because they do quality work and they back up their product. Their people were very friendly and easy to work with, and I could call them at any time. They were very amendable and always willing to go the extra mile. The pool that we have now is right in my backyard. It’s a free form and doesn't have a spa. And since my disability requires me to exercise, I can now do that in my pool all the time. I also have a big family and they're welcome to come over and play, whether it’s shining or not. During their visits, we usually end with a meal or something, so it's also an opportunity for us all to get together.

We chose Anthony and Sylvan to build our pool after considering other companies. They have a fantastic reputation and came highly recommended by several neighbors and friends. What we also felt was important- was that they handle every aspect of building the pool. They construct the pool, install the fencing, install the pool decking, and have a great service department and their own retail stores that carry the products they recommended specifically for your pool. Everyone has been so supportive and available to assist in any way. They have an amazing Warranty division headed by N[redacted] C[redacted]. N[redacted] has been supportive every step of the way along with his incredible associate L[redacted] H[redacted] They go above and beyond to address any issues you may have and will work endlessly until they find the right solutions. They define Custome Service and Loyalty. K[redacted] is one of their best techs along with T[redacted] S[redacted] who supervised our plaster work, and have just been great to deal with. What I would tell someone who was thinking about building a pool- is that Anthony and Sylvan stands by their work. They care about their customers and they understand this is one of the biggest investments a family will make and they do everything in their power to truly make this your private oasis.
The people in service have been so great to work with. From scheduling with D[redacted] A[redacted], and S[redacted]- they all work so hard to get your pool opened and closed on the dates that are convenient for the customer and have a tech out in a day if you have a specific service need. They treat you with such kindness and I have developed nice friendships over the years with these wonderful people. M[redacted] is the service manager, but he has also worked on our pool for several years. He knows the pool and the equipment inside and out. I trust him completely and I know he works hard to train his crew to be knowledgeable and dependable. He is such a great guy and always enjoy getting to see him.
The retail store in Montgomeryville I go to is a life saver. They test your water and give a computerized reading for free. Then they can tell you exactly what chemicals you need to balance your pool and the exact amounts. T[redacted]s the store manager and is so helpful and really cares about his customers. They all greet you with a big smile and you actually develop friendships because you are in there a couple of times a week. They make keeping your pool water balanced and beautiful a stress free chore! All of the retail workers have been so nice and knowledgeable. They also have a great loyalty program that provides discounts on supplies and chemicals.
To me- the most important factor in doing business with anyone is that they stand by their work. Especially when it is such a large investment. Anthony and Sylvan have been building pools a long time and their customer service is incredible. They never abandon you and can always be reached. We are so happy we chose them to build our pool and will have a very long relationship with them. It was definitely the RIGHT and the BEST choice of pool companies.
There are so many wonderful people that have helped us- but I am unable to recall all of the names. I appreciate them all. There are so many fantastic people that work very hard behind the scenes to make Anthony and Sylvan the number one pool company across the country.

Review: Dear Sir or Madame,

I have struggled with this company from construction to completion to obtaining a final inspection of a new pool construction for over a year.

Everything was fine in the beginning stages of design and obtaining a permit for a new pool construction in December 2012. They got the portion of money they required to start and they started very promptly in April 2013. The construction manager promised me that the pool will be completed before July 4th, 2013. I planned a family reunion of more than 20 people with that promise in mind. Needless to say, the pool did not get completed by then and we had many disappointed relatives looking at an unfilled pool.

Through many difficult conversations with multiple personnel up the chain, the company's Director of Operations East Coast Division, Neil C[redacted], finally gave me some restitution for that fiasco.

My struggles with the company still hasn't ended. There was a final inspection on the construction 8/9/13 that they FAILED! I have since tried to get them to address the issues in order to pass the final inspection without any success. It is quite frustrating and upsetting. Several different company employees have contacted me but no one will take any responsibility to get the job completed. I contacted [redacted] County to make an appointment for final inspection but they will only take appointments made by the builders of the pool.

My biggest complaint with this company is their poor communications amongst each other. No one has a clue what another employee has done. For example, I was contacted by Chris G[redacted] on May 12, 2013 concerning the final inspection. He told me to contact him after the pool was opened. I contacted him two days later and he told me he will take care of it. I have not heard from him since. I was then contacted by Todd I** on June 5,2013. He had no clue about my conversation with Chris G[redacted]. He told me that he will contact me the next day after setting up the final inspection; I haven't heard from him since either. I left a message with Neil C[redacted] but have not heard back from him.

Another complaint is each individual employee never accepts responsibility for actions or lack of actions yet can not direct you to the person who should be responsible either. They always point to someone else.

There are plenty more grievances but I hope this will help start the process.

When addressing my complaint with them, they may bring up owed funds for a custom spa cover. That has also been a fiasco. They brought out a cover that was made backwards and did not fit. They "fixed" that one but it is still not made correctly. They demanded payment but I refused. They left that one to use temporarily last November until a correct one was made. They apparently have another one waiting to be delivered but I told them I did want to deal with the spa cover until they passed the final inspection. In the meanwhile, all winter when it got windy, the spa cover would blow off. The problem of the spa cover blowing off is unrelated to the spa cover being made backwards. It's just not a good product and they can't securely tie it down and I don't want it. It's going to blow off and hurt someone or cause some damage.Desired Settlement: 1. Fix failures in order to pass the final inspection.

2. They can have their spa cover back. I don't want it.

3. I don't owe them any funds and my balance be $0. If anything, they should pay me additional restitution for all my struggles.

I am rejecting this response because: The response is that they have reached out however we are not even close to a resolution. There was another final inspection today and once again it FAILED. I must now wait for Anthony and Sylvan to do their part to pass the final inspection; no telling how long that will take them. Then I will need the Revdex.com assistance to work out a resolution concerning the non-functional spa cover and balance due. For the record, the balance due is not related to the pool construction as I have already paid that part in full of $62,000. Please keep my complaint active as there is not a clear resolution in sight.

We have reached out the customer and are trying to resolve their issues. The final inspection has been rescheduled with their local jurisdiction on 8/13/14. The last failure (on 7/21/14) was due to the homeowner not being home when the inspector arrived (which is a requirement of their jurisdiction).

Review: Deterioration and cracks in shell and pool/spa wall caused by improper construction/surface preparation.Pool constructed in 06. Within 3 yrs, tiles on wall btw pool and spa began to fall off. Scheduled warranty svc call to repair. Upon arriving Anthony Sylvan (AS) rep noted that there were significant problems with the wall and that all mortar and tiles needed to be removed and replaced. He did so, however he did not conduct any further prep of the shell. Tiles held for a few yrs then began to fall off, mortar is crumbling and parts of the shell have broken off at spillway. Large crack has also appeared in shell. Note that upon closing the pool each yr, 2x4's are placed across the spillway so that the pool cover does not come in contact with tiles. Contacted AS on 5/14 to report issue. AS requested pix on 5/15, which were sent. Not hearing from AS, I followed up on 5/20 and was told "this happens to be one of those areas on the pool not considered to be part of the shell". They would send an inspector out for $95. I told them no, and they agreed to waive fee and send someone out in am on 5/29. Took off from work but he didn't show at designated time. He was kind enough to call me and discuss issues as I could no longer meet him in person. On phone, he stated there was little to no prep of the shell required for an effective bonding of mortar to take place and a rough surface was preferred as that would hold bond better. He stated that a thin layer of mortar would be applied and tiles affixed to that mortar. I asked him what the normal thickness of the mortar was and he indicated less than an inch.Inspector arrived in pm and my wife was present. He stated that he did not see the shell. However, pix provided to AS show a clear line that forms between two substances, one being the shell and one the mortar. He observed that the mortar was very thick, and stated that the wall was built too short so they needed to build it up higher to accommodate a proper spillway from the spa. He took pix to send to warranty dept. The inspector stated (1)little to no prep of shell required to bond to mortar, (2)only a thin layer of mortar is used, (3)excess mortar was applied to compensate for wall that was built too short. I received no call or email from AS. On 6/18, I emailed AS and they replied that it was "a mortar bed issue" not covered and they gave me a list of contractors to contact. I replied that I disagreed and cited The Ceramic Tile Institute of America report 2011-4-11 Subject: Pool Tile Installation states: Prep and cleaning: Concrete pool shells are rarely smooth, free of contamination and defects, and are generally insufficient for the direct application of waterproofing or tile without proper surface prep. Proper prep and cleaning of all surfaces to be tiled is imperative to a successful installation. The following protocol should be followed: 1)Inspect the structure for high areas in need of chipping, grinding or bush hammering and lower as needed2)Clean the entire surface of the pool in order to remove any and all of the aforementioned impurities. Listed below are some of the methods, which will vary depending on the condition of the surface a)Low pressure washing/scrubbingb)Acid cleaning c)Sand blasting d)Grinding e)High pressure water cleaning f)High pressure water blastingThis widely publicized guidance contradicts the statement that "little to no prep of the shell required for an effective bonding of mortar". The improper finishing of the shell resulted in what the CTIA refers to as Bond Failure. AS built a wall too low, compensated with excess mortar applied to the shell that by their own admission needs no special prep. No reply from AS when presented with these facts. I asked the cust. svc rep to pass me up chain. We connected and he explained that the area is often problematic as it is exposed to elements. Recommended protecting the area during closure (already done). I expressed my disappointmeDesired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Other (requires explanation)

Review: Anthony & Sylvan Pools has misrepresented their in ground pool installation agreement. I have a plan from the project manager of A&S that estimated completion that has never been on schedule. I do understand that weather has an influence on completion, however I was informed that this was considered in the completion calculation. As per contact a deposit was made to begin project at excavation $36,500 on July 1, 2013. Second payment of $50,188 was made when the shell was sprayed. Since the end of July until today (9/6/13)tile was completed, however every other item on their timetable has not been finished. I have been lied to from A&S in addition to [redacted]. On this dat, 9/6/13 I spoke to [redacted] directly at 11:02am to inquire about the crew was dedicated to this location until completion of stone work. [redacted] informed me that they were running late, but would be at our location in 2 hours. He also informed me that stone was being delivered, but the truck was having electrical problems. Another blatant lie. The stone was delivered just an hour late, no problems that the driver could recall.

Anthony & Sylvan built our pool and this summer it’ll be 29 years old. This last time was the second or third time that we have it renovated over the years, and it was great. We had different kinds of tile and coping put on this time. It gave a whole new look to the pool, and we’ve had a lot of very complimentary comments about it. The guy who came out initially discussed everything, and was very professional. He’s been in this business for a long time, and knew what he was talking about. He was very helpful in having helped us make decisions as to what we really wanted. We got it jackhammered, re-plastered, new tile, and new coping. Then of course pumping the pool out and getting water delivered. It was quite extensive, and was a time-consuming kind of a deal. I knew darn well that a lot of coordination goes in with this, because there’s so many different players. Good thing there was this girl who was very helpful as the process was going along. We’ve bad weather that messes up the schedule, but she put me at ease and took over. She said to relax, and made phone calls, then handled a lot of the stuff. I told my wife I can’t believe how easy this was to be done this time. It was just well worth it and we’re so happy. Highly recommended!
