Terrible claims handling ; the test of an insurance co.is when you have a claim.
While I was out of state, a water pipe burst in my guest bathroom. Luckily, the person watching the house brought in mail and discovered the hallway, bathroom , 2 bedrooms, utility room, and at least half of the wall to wall carpet flooded.
I was called the night of 8/17/22. T/T was notified the next morning .I got a great remediation company same day and their quick work prevented any mold. T/T “field adjuster” was supposed to be there by 19th but without explanation, didn’t show till the 22nd.
The contractor sent a detailed estimate for the remediation and repair on 8/25/22. Despite calls ,it wasn’t until 10/6,after I wrote emails that I was told the claim had been assigned to a “new” adjuster. When I got him , the first thing he said was the estimate was “too high” and he “just got the claim”. Typ-Tap had the claim for 6 weeks. It wasn’t a large claim “less than $25K, including remediation and repair but the adjuster went thru 2 different contractors who he claimed “would do the job” for the original low ball estimate of the field adjuster. After he didn’t like the estimates he got (which he refused to allow me , the homeowner and insured, to see) He eventually admitted the 2nd contractor had a higher number and he “won’t use them again.’ Though out he was insistent that ,even though he wasn’t a contractor, he had 20 years experience and delayed a straight forward resolution. As I draft this , he claimed he would finally accept the original estimate and convey the amounts outstanding. We shall see but I would seek any reasonable alternatives. I marked one star as I couldn’t post with “No stars”

Failed to ensure reported damage and I am now paying for a new roof. Once my roof is complete I intend to seek a different insurance company.

Claim #12-***

The customer submitted a claim on June 11, 2020, for roof damage and resulting interior water damage. The insured had Apex Roofing inspect roof and prepare an estimate. Tampa Bay Roofing did a temporary repair at no charge.
A field adjuster inspected the roof on June 16, 2020 and found no evidence of storm damage to the roof and was unable to determine the cause of the leak. Water damage was found on the ceiling and a wall in the master bath and master shower. The field adjuster prepared an estimate for the ensuing interior damage in the amount of $1,385.66, which is below the deductible of $2,500.00.
A Florida licensed contractor was dispatched to inspect the roof on July 7, 2020. The contractor found the roof had a double layer of shingles creating a dam which caused water to enter the home. It is estimated that the roof is seven years old based on the permit at the county permit office.
As a final part of our investigation, we dispatched an engineer. They completed their investigation of the roof on July 28, 2020. The engineer concluded that no wind damage or wind-created opening was observed along the roof surface. The section of previously repaired shingles on the roof hindered the engineer's ability to evaluate that portion of the roof.
On August 12, 2020, an under deductible settlement letter was sent to the insured.

This business is NOT in it for the people. We filed ONE claim as we had an issue with the trip switch of the AC which caused it to leak into our ceiling. Because we had this leak, we had to file a claim due to the damages on the drywall. Four months after filing, we were sent an email that this company will not renew us because we are "risk management." Livid. I am livid. How the hell else am I supposed to use homeowners insurance if I get reprimanded for using it for it's purpose!!!! What's worse is when I called to ask for further explanation, all I was told was "every year upper management reviews claims and determines which are at risk." So you're telling me "upper management" puts homeowner's policies on a spin wheel, spins it, and says "yep lets go with that one!" SUCH BS!!! I am doing what I am supposed to be doing with freaking insurance and the good guy gets screwed in the end! WORST COMPANY EVER!!!

Damage caused to home during mitigation that home owners insurance offered
I filed a home owners claim with typtap regarding a leak in my roof. They offered mitigation and that same day FP restorations came to my home and placed a tarp on my roof to prevent further leaking since it was raining in my area every day. When FP restorations was here they advised their was moisture detected in the walls of 2 of my restrooms. They advised with the approval of the home owners insurance they would place dehumidifiers in the restrooms to avoid any mold. They removed 3 baseboards in total, breaking 1 of them. Typtap ultimately denied the claim. I have spoken with the restoration company since Typtap is so difficult to get a hold of and they advised they would not be returning to place back the baseboards or replace the broken baseboards. These baseboards were in perfect condition prior to the mitigation, more damage was caused to my house due to this mitigation. Typ tap should pay for the base boards to be replaced. THey are my home owners insurance and I should not be left with damage caused by mitigation they offered.

Desired Outcome

I believe ethical thing to do would be for Typtap to pay FP restorations to replace/repair broken baseboards since they were damaged during the mitigation.

The customer has a HO-3 policy with TypTap Insurance. A claim was submitted under this policy on June 6, 2020, due to a roof leak. A contractor was assigned to tarp the roof and complete water mitigation. The field adjuster completed an inspection on June 12, 2020. No storm related damage was found on the composition shingle roof. The roof appears to have leaked around the skylights. The field adjuster prepared an estimate for the resulting interior water damages, but it was below the $2,500 deductible. During the dry-out process, the mitigation contractor removed several sections of baseboards. The contractor recently contacted the policyholder to replace the baseboards, but the work had already been completed by the insured. We are working with the insured to reimburse them for the expense of replacing the baseboards.

Cancelled my insurance for my home. Insurance pics were taken before my new roof was put on. After showing the inspector my roofing contract Thought there were no problems. After 2 weeks I was cancelled. Talked to the company and after insuring them all remodeling work was done, they would not reanstate my policy. What a waste of time and money. Now I have a lapse and I'm finding it hard to find affordable home owners insurance.

I filed a claim with my Homeowners insurance over a simple plumbing issue which I was able to resolve with a licensed plumber for $130.
I don't know if what Typ Tap did was illegal, but it seems unethical to me. Their estimate came in 214$ above the 2500$ deductible, and many of the items on the estimate seemed superfluous. They informed me that I was unable to withdraw the claim. The agent in charge did not inform me that I had such a high deductible until after the recording process and the claim had been filed. Had she done so, I most likely would have reconsidered. I have not received payment, and I do not intend to endorse a check if they send one. I informed the agent that I would lodge a complaint with BB.

Desired Outcome

I request to withdraw the claim.

The customer has a Homeowner's policy with TypTap Insurance. A claim was submitted under this policy on January 15, 2020, for damages from a leak in the bathroom. TypTap enlisted a leak detection company to determine the exact cause of the leak, but it was cancelled due to the fact that the customer's plumber had made the repairs. TypTap also sent a field adjuster who wrote an estimate for the damages to the second-floor master bathroom and garage below. The customer is correct in that the amount of damages exceeded the deductible by $214.36 and payment was issued. The deductible was discussed during the first conversation with the insured. A notice of the deductible amount is also shown on the signed application and included on the policy documents which were mailed to the customer.
While it is understandable that the customer wishes to withdraw the claim, once a claim has been reported and investigated it is an insurer's duty to pay for damages per the policy.

TypTap Insurance Company Response • Nov 19, 2018

The customer has a Flood policy with TypTap. A claim was submitted under this policy on September 12, 2017 due to hurricane Irma. We issued the insured an advance on September 26, 2017 to assist with living expenses. We assigned a field adjuster to the claim and he performed his inspection on October 19, 2017. Based off the field adjusters report we made payment on October 26, 2017. The insured hired a company to do the dry out and cleanup and we issued a payment to them on November 28, 2017. We received a list of damage personal property on April 3, 2018, but the list was incomplete and the insured was notified of the need for additional information. Even though we did not receive the corrected inventory form we proceeded to process the information and made an actual cash value payment on October 2, 2018. On November 15, 2018 a settlement offer was made and accepted by the customer, which will bring the claim to an amicable resolution.
Thank you for the opportunity to respond, and we hope this clarifies all items presented.
