We purchased a lot from this company that is located in Hilo Hawaii. We agreed to pay property taxes for the lot that we purchased. The property taxes in Hawaii are due in August and February each year. We just purchased the property last year so this is the first year that we have to worry about taxes. In December 2017 I received an email from Typhoon with an attachment for the property tax bill. It showed that the first installment was due in August 2017 and that we are already late and the second payment is due in 2 months Feb 2018. Upon contacting the property tax office, I learned that the bill included taxes on a dwelling that I did not purchase. After several calls to Hawaii, the property tax person went out in the field for a day and confirmed that there is no dwelling. I asked if she could re-assess the taxes and she said they cannot go backwards, however next years property tax bill will only be a lot and cost $200. They also told me that Typhoon bought the property for $28k a couple years ago and at that rate there couldn't have been a house on it. So, apparently their property tax division of this Real Estate Investment company did not do their homework and correct the tax bill to remove the assessment of taxes on a house that isn't there. The property tax office does not show my name on the bill, but according to Typhoon I am liable for the taxes. The total bill as of 2/15/18 is $1,374.11. I contacted Joanie at Typhoon and she was very nasty and told me that "you signed a contract agreeing to pay all of the taxes that are due." And I agree that I owe the $200 minimum tax for a lot in Hawaii, Not $1,268.80 plus penalties and interest on a house that I didn't purchase. I asked Joanie to have her legal department to contact me directly. That was one week ago today and I still have not heard from them. I left another message this morning before I decided to take this route.
