Review: My wife and I wish to register a complaint against the Litchfield Inn, where we spent the night of August 8, 2013. Our room in the new wing (#107) lacked hot water. When we complained to the desk, the receptionist acknowledged there had been problems with the water heater, which apparently in our case had not been rectified. We were assured they would work on the problems during the night. The next morning, the water was warm but not hot, and certainly inadequate for shaving, comfortable showering, and washing hair. The desk clerk offered us a 20% discount and indicated that any further consideration would require the approval of the manager. We were not satisfied with the 20% and asked to speak with the manager. He or she was, we were told, unavailable but would be notified of our unhappiness. When we checked out at 10:50 on the morning of August 9, we were told the manager had not yet arrived. This was, once more, at 10:50 AM. Apparently, the manager of the Inn keeps very strange hours. One does not like being ducked in this clumsy manner when one has a legitimate complaint. What kind of an inn takes a guests money in the knowledge that hot water may not be available, and then denies access to the manager when problems have not been satisfactorily addressed and hot water has in fact not been provided? My wife and I lived in [redacted] in the 70s and recall many pleasant outings to Litchfield and many happy visits to the Litchfield Inn. Sadly, the old Litchfield Inn is no more. Customers of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and inns check in with the reasonable expectation of hot water. This is one aspect of the implicit contract between any establishment and its guests. If hot water is unavailable, then the implicit contract has been broken and the accommodations are ipso facto unsatisfactory. Inn personnel never apologized to us and would not let us speak with the manager. A first-rate establishment would have given us back 100%. We will accept a 50% discount.
