I come to view an apartment. I'm shown a "fully remodeled unit" with 2 beds/baths that has all-new appliances, flooring, surfaces, etc. I apply on a quote of $725/month for Apt. 178A, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, to be a regular unit.
I then have a manager hike it to $875 without telling me. When I ask, she says it's because it will be a "full remodel." I say I'll continue looking elsewhere. A few minutes later, I get a call back she'll charge $800, because that's "the lowest the bank will let us go," and the apparent earlier mistake of theirs.
I ask continually for pictures of the specific unit. I never get any. I come back to town briefly, calling ahead to see it and the agent wastes virtually all my slot, being out of the office for all but a few minutes. She says the unit is open and gives the wrong building number. I finally find the unit, but it's locked. I then go back to the office, get the key, and go in, only to find the lights not working. I end up having about 3-4 minutes in the dark. The unit also is supposedly still undergoing remodeling, and maintenance personnel are "working hard on it," the manager tells me.
I come on moving day, lights are finally working, and I see bunches of problems. I have a crew set to move in and figure there's been another mixup, as no "full remodel" could look like this. I trust the company, in good faith, will repair it and adjust pricing as needed.
I go to the office to talk with management personnel. A couple is there, talking about leasing. Rather than my stating so all can hear that my unit has severe problems and is thusly overcharged, I have the manager come over. A senior manager then has me come back to her office to talk about it and says she'll take this up with her boss.
I get many false claims from the company after this. They say it is only supposed to be an "update," never mentioned by anyone and making the price change illogical. Even if it were an "update," the awful vanities, bowing showers, rust spots and unsafe windows show it's not done.

Other (requires explanation) The company makes the monthly rate $*** - the base for that unit - and repairs basic problems (especially in the bathrooms and with windows being secured in place). I am also asking for a change of lease to 6 months from 12, as I am disturbed at the misrepresentations and attitudes encountered, ending up resembling a bait & switch.
We agree that Mr.H. was quoted $*** . We will honor rental rate of $*** he will be advise today.
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I appreciate the move to put the rent back at $***; thank you for that. However, I did register other concerns as well.
The bathrooms in particular are in poor condition, and I just a day or two ago noted similar problems in the base of the kitchen counters. I think the rehab strategy has been paint, paint, paint, not fix.
I need the rot and other troubles - in particular in the bathrooms - to be fixed. I also need better window security. These are necessary regardless of rent.
I am also asking for the 12-month lease to be changed to 6 months due to the significant problems I've had with getting service, misrepresentations made to me, etc. I would then add the second 6 months if service and the other issues are addressed in good order the rest of these first six months.
