Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

I as well have a cards with this bank. I always make sure my payments are made and even pay extra and they lower my credit limit because they say my credit score dropped. REALLY!!!! I believe it's time to pay them off and close my accounts. I can take my business elsewhere. Lowe's and JcPenney should really look into using different financial institutes.

I had a Lowes card that Synchrony Bank took over. Always paid on time and paid more than minimum. Since Synchrony Bank took over my limit has been dropped 2x each by $200.00. Dont know why my credit score has to do with my paying my bill on time. Went on line and closed account.

I recently moved. I had a minimum balance due on TJMaxx card. I updated my address with TJMaxx. I told them on several occasions that I was not receiving statements to my current address. (I specifically do not sign up for online payments so I am able to track my bills.) My home does not have an address on the house but only on the curb, which causes many issues with my mail. Today I applied for a pre approval on a mortgage and put in an offer on a home. What do you know? Synchrony bank has been reporting me late for 150 days, KILLING my credit score, even though my card has a zero balance. I told them about the address issue (which was documented in their system) but they refused to open an invesigation with the credit bureaus. This is not my first address issue with Synchrony. They claim to have left me voicemails that I nerve received. How can I pay a bill when I don't know it exists? It's probably sitting in some random persons mailbox.

After reading all the negative reviews I don't have much else to add. This bank has very suspicious practices. Bills not showing up, lowering credit limits, outright lying on the letter they sent explaining their "decision" to lower my credit limit. Rude and condescending customer service. Listen to the advice here folks. If you don't have credit with them run for your life and be thankful. If you do have credit with them pay it off as quick as you can and get the "hey out of dodge." This company will mess up your credit for sure.

This is by far THE worst bank I have ever come into contact with!!!!!!!!! With an above average credit score I am being denied! I have read other comments from others with a score lower than mine. WOW.....,.A big disappointment. I will warn EVERYBODY about this bank!

Synchrony Bank clearly boasts one of the worst if not THE WORST credit card customer service and support operations I have ever encountered. Foreign call centers send you down endless gerbil-wheel-inspired "security" and "identity theft" hoops and hurdles that inconveniently and ridiculously require you to receive and return over the telephone numeric "codes" in order to reactivate your card after it gets constantly and inexplicably declined at gas pumps and cash registers or, worse, cruise ships in the middle of the ocean, simply because, as they put it, "we need to verify your identify" again and again and again... as if paying them in full every month, or informing them of impending travel beforehand, or calling them ten times a week to reactivate their annoying card isn't enough. What's next? E-mailed DNA samples on a weekly basis? In short, Synchrony Bank has taken what little fun was left in plastic purchasing power and turned it into a Kafka-esque nightmare of induced sweats, stress, and needless aggravation during critical transactional times, such as those involving travel, which they promote themselves at Sam's Club as specializing in when this couldn't be further from the truth. My Visa card from Chase got my JetBlue business last week after Synchrony inexplicably declined the transaction online. The phonecall afterward to a guy in Calcutta turned into a veritable swamp of condescension and Alice in Wonderland twists and turns, proving yet again that Synchrony Bank is a mindless, clueless, and utterly unresponsive machine rooted firmly in the spirit of stupidity and needless aggravation. They don't deserve our transactional business. Funny enough, they're denying themselves this transactional business every time they decline the purchase of an airline ticket or a gas pump purchase, so this village it will eventually bury itself if it doesn't catch up to the 21st century of credit card servicing and banking. And, honestly, would it kill Synchrony Bank to employ just a couple capable American citizens to answer their phones when servicing legitimate consumer concerns and complaints? I mean, Synchrony Bank was once GE Capital, and their humble origins were paid and paved for by farmers turning on the light bulbs at night to read the good book. So let's honestly make America Great Again. ;) Let's start by hiring credit card call center PROFESSIONALS who actually understand what's required to get the job done in an American purchasing arena, including Synchrony's own. Thanks, Synchrony Bank, for almost ruining my last vacation. Plain and simple, you suck. And badly. I gave you more than enough chances to redeem yourself, and so I'm never using your card again. Life's too short for such unsavory [redacted]. You make Discover Card look good again.

On Aug 17, 2016 Capital One mailed a check (Synchrony doesn't accept balance transfers via electronic transfer) to Synchrony. I hadn't seen a payment post to my Synchrony account by the 23rd so I contacted Capital One and realized that I had given the wrong PO Box number. I had given the number listed on the letter that the cards were attached to when sent to me. When I realized my mistake I called Synchrony to find out if the check would eventually "catch up" to my account provided the account number was listed correctly. The first person I spoke to was not fluent in English and did not understand my question. "If Capital One sent a check to the wrong PO Box would it still make it's way to my account?". My answer, "that is not a Synchrony Bank PO Box number", really? I am looking at it as we speak on the letter the cards are attached to." Him, "let me speak to my supervisor"..."my supervisor says that isn't a PO Box we use"...Me "can I speak to the supervisor"...I again explain that I had originally put the incorrect PO Box on the balance transfer and just this evening realized my mistake. My question is would the payment from Capital One "catch up" with my account? Supervisor (very slowly as if speaking to a child) "ma'am this is not Capital One, this is Synchrony"...Me "I know this is Synchrony, I said that it was a balance transfer check FROM Capital One"...eventually....supervisor "what PO Box did you use"...Me [redacted]...supervisor "that isn't a payment PO Box"...Me, "I know that now, but my question is will the payment eventually make it's way to the correct department?"...supervisor "I don't know, maybe you should contact the your bank and put a trace on the check"...It is not from my bank and I know that it hasn't been cashed and it was sent to box [redacted] on the 17th"...supervisor "that's the wrong PO Box number for payments"...Me "I know that now, but that doesn't change my question"...supervisor, "I can't guarantee anything, if it went to the wrong PO Box they won't even open it"...Me, "how would they know it went to the wrong PO Box if they don't open it"...supervisor "it will be sent back to you since you sent it to the wrong PO Box"...Me "you know what, I'll just close all of my accounts, this is ridiculous"...supervisor (raising his voice) "LOOK, YOU SENT IT TO THE WRONG PO BOX"...at this point I did use some bad language...Me "don't raise your voice to me just because you can't seem to understand my question and your company has stupid policies"...supervisor (speaking even louder) "I am not raising my voice"...Me..."just give me your name and operator/supervisor number"...supervisor, "Charlie"...Me, "that's it, Charlie"...charlie, " we don't give out last names for security reasons"...Me, "I didn't ask for your last name, am just supposed to say I spoke to Charlie? Don't you have an operator number" charlie "it's [redacted]"...Me and I want an address to complain about your customer service and you in particular"...After all of this I still have no idea what will happen to the check once it gets to the wrong PO Box, nor do I know why it is a situation that customer service finds impossible to answer"
I will be paying off my accounts as quickly as possible. It just sucks that I now have 5 different accounts with them that all started out as different companies. This is the first time I've had to deal with customer service on this particular account, suffice it to say that I am less than satisfied with the entire experience. If Charlie [redacted] is the best you have to offer as a supervisor, then I suggest you go back to the want adds.

I became a customer of Synchrony Bank when I applied for their Blain's Farm and Fleet credit card December 2015, , used it for Christmas, maid my monthly payments, then paid card off in Full , March 2016.. I hadn't used the card, planned on saving it for holiday buying only, today August 24th I received a letter in the mail from Synchrony, the closed my account, with multiple excuses, too high of balances, delinquent, revolving credit, all of which is Not true, I called Synchrony, spoke with a representative, she said in her words, the reason for closing my account, was due to the fact that I had not used the card in 6 months.. how is this legit, I'm building my credit score, now they have flagged me. And basically tied my hands. My son's birthday's are all coming up within 2 weeks to a month, now I will not be able to provide... they did this to me last year on another card I had, the moment I paid it off in full, they dropped me... their letter always states the same, but when you talk with a representative, it's due to the fact that you're not using their card enough.... I'll stick with Capital One!

Just went through a week navigating a labyrinth of ineptitude within this bank's customer service department. Spent a total of 3+ hours on the phone, most of it on hold. They closed a new savings account on the same day they cashed the $20,000 check I sent to fund the account. They never notified me that this deposit kicked out as an exception, only sent a form letter days later stating that my account was closed. No CSR could explain where my money was nor why I didn't receive notice of an exception to my deposit. Until I reached a supervisor, I felt as if a CSR's primary metric is to complete a call ASAP and get me off the phone. A supervisor yesterday absolutely guaranteed me that my account would finally be credited for the initial deposit in last night's update. Yet, this morning my account still had a zero balance. I took another hour on the phone with another supervisor, who apparently had to cajole the back office to please credit me with money that Synchrony received and cleared 10 days ago.
This was more than an unacceptable customer service transaction. This was ineptitude bordering on fraud. How dare they take my money, yet fail to give me an accurate accounting of it. I would not recommend doing business with this bank until they completely revamp the tools/training used by CSRs, who are really the customer's lifeline in an online banking situation.

It looks like I am not the only one. Synchrony (GE Capital) must think a name change fixes things. It does not! I have had multiple cards with both company names and nothing has changed, specifically their web sites and user friendliness. They have a web site that seems to have the same tousles across all cards. Try to call tech support, forget it. they have to take your information and maybe get back to you. The last of my complaints is that they can't seem to get with the times and interface with Quicken. I just feel, as an IT guy and HSI installer, I have seen better run, more supportive companies run out of someones living room.

I FIND IT BOTH INTERESTING AND HIGHLY DISGUSTING THAT I HAVE HAD (2) RECENT EXPEREINCES WITH SYNCHRONY BANK AND BOTH WERE NEGATIVE. BOTH TIMES (WITHIN 2 WEEKS OF EACH ATTEMPT) I WAS REFUSED VERIFICATION OF MY CREDIT ACCOUNT FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF PAYING ON MY ACCOUNT. THE SECOND TIME I CALLED WAS AFTER MY PAYMENT (4X'S THE MINIMUM) WAS REFUSED BECAUSE OF THE ACCOUNT #. I WAS TOLD THE ACCOUNT # WAS THE SAME AS MY CREDIT CARD AND THAT APPEARS NOT TO BE THE CASE. SINCE MY PAYMENT WAS RETURNED FOR LACK OF THE CORRECT ACCT. #, MY ATTEMPT WAS TO CALRIFY THE ACCOUNT # AND SEND THE PAYMENT. THEY REFUSED YET AGAIN. IN THIS TIME OF FRAUD AND NO-PAYMENT OF DEBT THERE IS NO REASONABLE EXPLANATION OF REFUSAL TO ASK KEY VERIFICATION QUESTIONS AND GET MY ACCOUNT CURRENT SO I CAN PAY THEM...NOW IT WILL BE NEXT WEEK BECAUSE OF THE WEEKEND. NEVER AGAIN WILL I DEAL WITH SUCH IS WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

this morning my daughter who has a American Eagle card on my account went to the mall to buy some shorts from American Eagle. First she had to go get gas, when she ran the card, it didn't work. She thought it was the gas station so she tried anther, same thing. So she decided to go to the mall and do her shopping. No problem, she got her shorts at American Eagle and paid with her American Eagle credit card. Then she went to buy gas on the way home, card wouldn't work. she called me and I called customer service. Just today they mailed out new chip cards to us and their policy when they send out new cards is to cancel the old ones. Good news is our new cards would be here in 7-10 days. My daughter is sitting at a gas station needs gas and has one credit card that doesn't work because Synchrony cancels the old cards when they send out new ones. Sorry but how stupid. Amex and Chase also sent us new chip cards but they didn't cancel the old cards. Will be canceling the AE card!

I had a BP gas card with Chase they sold to scnchrony. Started getting multiple phone calls during the day with a long drawn out message and telling me to call a number which I did. Got the same message and finally could get hold of customer service. Like speaking to the devil. Seems like Chase sent my May bill with the words Auto pay is on and the day for withdrawal from my checking account only they did not withdraw it although I certainly thought it was paid (I always pay the balance in full) well synchrony has not been nice about it even though it is their mistake and the chack is in the mail as I cannot get at their website, it ia like it does not exist. Finally the last straw they have shut off our ability to use our credit card. What a horrid company.

Asked the same question to three new account reps and received three different answers. Sent an email to customer service and never received a reply.. Not the most professional group.

PLEASE DO NOT EVER USE THIS FINANCIAL INSTITUTION!!! We financed a bed from SLEEP TRAIN--biggest mistake ever. I have spoken with a representative every month for 3 months running, and every one of them has a different story. This is not a misunderstanding--this is exactly what they just told me on the phone: I have been charged late fees every month for 3 months for making a payment TOO EARLY!!! I scheduled payments online for 4 months online since we would be out of town, and since I scheduled the first one too early, every subsequent payment was considered late because they say I skipped a payment --the one I made too early. They count the too-early one as an extra payment. OMG!!! So now, a supposed no-interest offer has cost us $119 in late fees--which they will not waive (and don't use the term "waive" with them--you have to say reversed. They act like they have no idea what you mean by asking for a fee to be "waived.") I have not missed a payment ever--simply made what they consider to be an extra payment and am being charged late fees every month. In the calls I made to the company three months in a row, I asked the rep just to give me the amount of money to pay to make things right, any amount that would keep me from getting late fees any more. I made payments AND extra payments (not counting the too-early one), amounts calculated by the "customer service" rep, and STILL late fees every month. I am going to take out a loan from my credit union and pay the interest on it to get out from under this company's unethical, illogical thumb. STAY AWAY from these folks. Paying interest will be cheaper than paying their trumped up fees.

I just received my statement ( formerly Chase BP) to synchrony. Informing me that my interest rate has gone up to 26.99% , which is a DOUBLE Digit increase from what it has been for 15 years with Chase & that the "balance transfer" option has been removed from my account. Called customer service could barely understand ( awful English speaking). I was told it is due to the "conversion". WTH does that mean?

My experience with Synchrony Bank has been nothing but amazing. I noticed on my statement that I was being charged 29.9% interest because I didn't pay the full balance by the end of the no interest promotion. I quickly called Synchrony and spoke to an account manager by the name of Leah. She looked and saw I made my payments on time and within 30 days of the promotion expiring, so she went ahead and credited all the interest back to me. She went above and beyond my expectations. I will continue to use Synchrony for life. Thank you for actually caring about your customers.

I made a payment on my Sam's Club Bill July 13 and once again July 27. My thought was the July 27th payment would be applied to August. My account statement fell on July 29th. Well I can handle that I am hit with a 35 dollar late fee even when that amount paid was 1/3 or my total balance, even though I do not necessarily agree with it.

The bigger issue is I thought I was canceling another account with Sam's Club when I actually canceled this account. I immediately contacted Sam's only to be transferred and kept on hold until other business away from the phone presented itself. I then called back 5 hours later at the end of my workday hoping to resolve this issue, but was told that because my account was delinquent there was no way to reinstate my account and that I would have to reapply for membership forfeiting any rewards accrued in that account. The rewards totaled 63 dollars, which would have covered any required payment on the account.

So now my options presented by Sam's Club/Sychrony are to pay off the balance and reapply or close my account for good. Either way forfeiting rewards from an online action that was made in error.

It is my opinion that there is not much oversight nor any information for consumer's of consequences on the online system whether decisions were made in error or intentionally. It has been a negative experience dealing with Sam's Club and with affect future interactions.

I do not know who is running this company because he is a fool and the worst fool ever, where did he get his business degree. This fool is losing money for every companies they collect for, he must be working for the competition. I have been with JCPenny for decades and all of sudden I received a letter cancelling my account and just yesterday I received one from HHGREGG lowering my credit limit and that is only because I still have balance left.
I am looking into a lawsuit. If anyone is interested in coming together to fight this company SYNCHRONY BANK. I can be reached at [redacted] XXXXX

So, my wife and I already have two accounts with Synchrony, Sam's Club, and Ashley's Furniture.

Both have no missed payments, no problems, all in great standing.

I personally have below average credit. I have been building my credit however the past few years, and all my new stuff is up to date. Showing great improvements.

I tried to apply for an Amazon Store Card, and got denied immediately, after reading everywhere that people have gotten approved with scores less than mine. I also have a decently high income.

So I called their customer service, as some people recommended to talk to their credit reconsideration line. I verified all my information, to a very rude agent, and trying to explain to him my income, my credit situations, etc.

Nope, he just robotically said "You'll get a letter in the mail in 7 to 10 business days to explain why you were denied".

Once my other stuff with them is paid off, I'm just never going to use them anymore. They will sit dormant.

Why can't these kinds of places play fair? Do not even try to deal with this bank unless you are perfect.
