As one can clearly see on the top of the application this is a non refundable fee.  I am very aggressive in trying to get properties rented, and start the review process quickly.  I explained I was out of town and I will be happy to talk to them when I get back, but evidently that was not sufficient and we find our self here. As far as being a "slum lord" I guess the temperament of a person to throw that sort of disparagement speaks for itself.
