During severe weather conditions, this plumber charged an exorbitant fee $385.00 for a 5 minute job which involved placing a cap on a busted hose.
Charleston SC had severe weather conditions for a week which caused a hose under my raised back porch to bust around 3:30 pm on 1/7. I phoned Suburban Plumbing & they did send someone to our house at 5:00pm. I had already turned off the main water to stop the flow. It took him only a minute to determine that the hose could be capped off but would cost me $385.00. I let him know I thought the price was very excessive for the job. But I was left with no choice. Either get it fixed for this fee or face freezing of all pipes that same night. The invoice I received in my email shows that pipe lines were replaced which did not happen. It took him only 5 minutes to simply place a cap on the hose. I called for a manager this morning & was told that this was a reduced fee for their "water services". I consider this to be price gauging during a time of emergency weather conditions.
I would like to have a refund for a reasonable fee that matches the service provided. I had another plumber tell me that the usual fee for coming out during this time frame and the type of service should have been no more than $125.00 max.
Our company uses flat rate menu pricing not hourly. We do not charge extra for after hours, weekend or emergency calls. The customer was given a $100 discount off of our normal price. Each customer is shown the price to make the necessary repairs before any work is done. She signed the quote saying she agreed to have us do the work at that price. She stated in one of her reviews that she didn't consider it an emergency. Since this was not an emergency, she could have easily called another company if she was not happy with the price. In reference to the invoice stating that lines were replaced, that is a generic description for a water line repair from our menu pricing. We charge that price to repair a leak on a 1.5 inch water line, replacing up to 2 feet of a water line.
Since this is our regular menu pricing, it can not be considered price gauging. I have never understood why a customer agrees to a price and then complains about the price once the work is done.
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
This was an emergency because the temps were dropping back down to freezing same night. I told the tech up front I thought the price was extremely over priced but felt I had no choice. He did not repair or replace a line. He simply capped off a hose so the water could be turned back on. The tech offered to come back and fix for $590.00 with half off of what I already paid. Instead I got an honest plumber to fix it for 168.00. No fair plumbing service would charge $385.00 to simply place a cap on a hose. A task that took 5 minutes.
