The consumer's combined roof and solar system (solar shingles) was removed and...
replaced under a manufacturer's recall from [redacted]. [redacted] selected Solar City to perform this national recall and correct the defect by removing the entire solar shingle system, rewiring/ replacing the wiring connectors, and reinstalling the entire solar shingle system. Stellar did not have an opportunity to correct this recall defect as [redacted] opted for a national provider (Solar City). At this point, Stellar maintains that it is no longer a Stellar installation thus voiding our 5 year installation warranty and the installation warranty now belongs to Solar City (who held the contract with [redacted] and was paid to mitigate the recall defect following the process outlined above). Stated differently, Stellar has not had involvement with the solar shingle installation that is currently on the consumer's house.
Additionally, after Solar City completed the initial repair they had to be called back approximately 10 months later due to a shorted connector/ harness (which is exactly the current issue) that needed to be repaired. They also indicated to the consumer that they would send him documentation on the recall repair and after repeated efforts to get this info, the consumer never received it. The current issue has been traced to the connector/ wiring of the rooftop solar shingles which were last installed by Solar City. They are currently refusing to warranty/ repair their installation.
Stellar understands that this is frustrating situation for the consumer. There would be absolutely no hesitation on our part to find a solution if it was our installation. At the same time, we do not feel that we should have to correct another company's installation without compensation. From our perspective, this complaint should be filed with SolarCity as they held the contract for the repair/ replace/ install with the manufacturer, were paid by the manufacturer, and utilized their employees to complete the installation that is currently on the consumer's roof.
