The customer requested the pickup of his motorcycle from its location, as it was in a non-running condition as a result of its
theft and recoveryWe retrieved the motorcycle and it was in complete disarrayThe body panels had been removed, the ignition switch damaged and broken, wires were pulled off, sensors hanging off, etcIf the customer had full coverage insurance on the motorcycle (as required by the financial institution that gave him the loan) this would without question have been a total lossThe customer was advised that we couldn't tell the extent of the damage until we could get it to start, which would take quite a bit of labor timeHe authorized up to $worth of repairsContrary to the customers' complaint, no specialist was called inOne of my technicians performed the diagnosisHe did make a host of temporary repairs to bypass the absent switches and damaged wires just to get the motorcycle to power up and startThe customer was then advised at that time that while it does start, it could not be test ridden or even running for more than one second as there was a hole in the side of the engine that oil would spew out of as soon as the engine started and a new engine cover would need to be installed before we could determine the condition of the engineWhile he was told that it ran, he was never told that it "was running like a champ." He authorized the repairs and we ordered the necessary engine coverUpon receiving the engine cover and installing it, we were then able to start and rev up the engineIt was determined at that time that while it did run, the engine had a loud knock, and would need to be torn down to determine the extent of the damageOn April 8th, 2015, the customer authorized us to tear it down further and we discovered damage to the crankshaft that was a result of the theft, and would require a new engine or a complete rebuildThe customer was notified of the damages immediatelyThe customer spoke to me and it was explained to him that there was no way anyone could know the condition of the engine until we were able to get it to where it would startHe threatened to call an attorney, and I advised him that if he felt that was what he needed to do, then he has that right to do soHis repair bill at this point is $for the repairs to the ignition system and wiring harness that have in fact been made to the motorcycleAs stated earlier, it will run, but it will not run very long in this condition, and there was no possible way anyone could have known that the engine had been compromised until the ignition system and wiring harness had been repaired to a point that we could get it to start
Throughout this entire process, the customer was notified many times of the status of his motorcycleMany messages were left throughout the process, however he had failed to return calls on many occasionsWe have a call log we have on file where twice he was called and his voice mail was full, once where we left a message, once where he was explained what we found on his engine at which point he authorized further teardown of the engine, and once more when he was again explained that there was no comprehensible way to know the condition of the engine prior to repairing the electrical systemIt was also explained to him at this time that if he were to provide a preowned engine from a salvage yard or online marketplace, we would be able to install it for him (we do not sell preowned engines)Preowned complete engines sold online for around $700-$plus labor cost to install the engine of around $

I spoke with the customer and squared everything away. The parts were on backorder for a few months as this was a special...
edition motorcycle. The salesman that sold him the motorcycle no longer was employed here when the parts finally came in, so the customer was not properly notified. I spoke to him and he will let me know when he has a convenient time available to bring the motorcycle in for replacement of the parts at no cost to him, as was promised when he purchased the motorcycle.
