Review: We have filed administrative complaints against this contractor with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission and the [redacted] County Office of Consumer Protection.

We signed a contract for a major home renovation in November 2011. It took the contractor nearly 2 full years for the work to pass a final inspection by the applicable governmental authority. During the course of this two year period, there were a number occasions where certain aspects of the work failed inspection or were left incomplete. First, a deck that that the contractor constructed failed inspection because it was not built according to the applicable building code. Then, our front entry stairs were left without a handrail for weeks. Finally, when the work was supposed to be complete, the project again failed inspection because the contractor had not installed smoke detectors, which were required under the applicable building code. In response, the contractor asked us for an additional payment to complete the work (even though our contract clearly stated that the contractor would perform the work in accordance with all applicable building codes). We refused to pay. Nearly a year later, the contractor finally agreed to complete the work for the project so that it could pass inspection. Now, the contractor has refused to do any warranty work (which warranty work was also specifically provided for in our contract) and won’t even return our calls.Desired Settlement: We wish to have the defects in the workmanship corrected.
