The owner of the company called me (after I had been waiting approximately 2.5 hours into my 3 hour service window) to let me know me would not be able to service my home. He stated that he did not feel my neighborhood was safe enough.
(As context, I live in a half million dollar home in DC but my neighborhood is comprised primarily of minorities.)
As I listened to his rationalization, I could not believe this provider was practicing redlining. Fortunately, most of us have forgotten, but redlining is the practice of denying services to residents of certain areas based on the racial or ethnic makeups of those areas.
It is considered to be practice long gone with the Jim Crow era but apparently still alive. The federal government, through the Department of Justice, (still) fights redlining cases across the country.
I suppose the owner, didn’t know or care, about this clear, on-its-face discriminatory practice.
I don’t want him to feel unsafe and I don’t want to work with anyone who deems me, or my community, unfit for services. So our desire not to work with each other is mutual.
