We try our best to accommodate our patients’ healthcare needs by reserving specific times in our schedule for their care. This time is highly valued as appointment times are important to our staff and our patients who are waiting for a time to reserve so we can meet their health needs. ...
When time is reserved, it is expected that all parties will honor the reserved time. If an appointment is cancelled at the last minute, it does not allow our office time to coordinate compatible replacement appointments thus leaving our office and staff with uncompensated dead time in our schedule and deprives deserving and needy patients of our services. This unfilled time in our schedule can never be recovered. Therefore, we have instituted a no-show and short notice cancellation policy that a fee is charged. This policy is very common in the health industry and is a policy that is presented to all our new patients in a form that they are requested to read and agree to by signing said document before becoming a regular patient or patient family of our practice. When patients disrespect our policy, they will be charged our minimal fee for missed appointments or will be dismissed from our practice. Parents and account holders are responsible for their children and their accounts. This patient disrespected our policy on numerous occasions and was billed accordingly. Despite the policy that was signed by the financially responsible person on this account, we extended courtesy waivers of the missed appointment charges for several hours of dead time in our schedule that was reserved for this patient on numerous appointments. It has become obvious that this patient does not respect the time we have reserved for her or her family. We have charged a minimal fee for the dead time in our office – this fee does not even cover our staff time that is set aside for the appointment that is missed. These are not high profit charges, rather they are a reminder to the patient of the importance of the time they have reserved in our office. The most recent appointment cancellation charges of $112.00 represent these hours of dead time in our office as a result of this patient’s disrespect for our office policy that she signed upon becoming a patient of this practice. Our office has appointments available every day after school hours, so if missing school was an issue, appointments should have been requested for after school hours.
