I had the "spring checkup" done about two months ago, and was told that my rear brakes needed cleaned. I asked around because this seemed sketchy, and nobody I knew had ever heard of this. So I declined to have this done. Last week, I took my car in for inspection and was told I needed rear brakes to the tune of $260. I said, "But you told me six weeks ago that they just needed cleaned," to which the mechanic responded, "Well, if you'd gotten them cleaned you wouldn't need them replaced." So, I had the brakes checked out by an independent mechanic who basically said 1) brakes did not need cleaned, and 2) I had nearly 1/8 inch of brake pad and clearly didn't need them replaced as 1/32 is the required width before needing replaced. So, I took my car to a different service station where I explained the situation, the guy showed me exactly what he was looking at when inspecting the brake, and my car passed inspection. This service station is clearly dishonest.
