I CONTACTED RIVERSIDE TRUCK & EQUIPMENT INC.I WAS COMMUNICATING WITH *** VIALL. HE INFORMED ME HE HAD A 2014 FREIGHT LINER M2 26" VIN # *** IN HIS LOT FOR SALE FOR 39110.25 I ASKED IF IT WAS INSPECTED TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE CHP, TO BE ROAD WORTHY. HE STATED YES THAT THE TRUCK WAS INSPECTED AND HAD THE MAINTENANCE RECORDS. I DROVE THE TRUCK A FEW MILES. IT HAS A SMART SHIFT TRANSMISSION, THAT I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH. SO IT WOULD NOT REGISTER ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL IT WAS DRIVEN FOR A LONGER DISTANCE OR PERIOD. I WORKED DECEMBER 10, THE TRUCK STALLED ON THE ROAD REGISTERING CODE .THE TRUCK WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. THE TRUCK WOULD NOT MOVE THE SMART SHIFT WOULD NOT ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO GO INTO GEAR. I CALLED *** IMMEDIATELY. HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE CODE MEANT AND HE NEEDED TIME TO RESEARCH. ABOUT 25 MINUTES LATER I AM TYING UP TRAFFIC, THE TRUCK STARTED. A FEW HOURS LATER THE TRUCK STALLED AGAIN,DISPLAYING CODE F ONCE AGAIN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT.I CALLED *** AGAIN IMMEDIATELY AND HIS RESPONSE WAS THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE CODE MEANT.I INFORMED HIM THAT THIS IS DANGEROUS IT LEAVING ME STRANDED, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS TRUCK. I WORK ONLY THREE DAYS, AND THE TRUCK CONTINUED STALLING DISPLAYING CODE F, I CONTINUED CALLING *** AND HE WOULD NOT GIVE ME A ANSWER ON THE TRUCK AS TO A RESOLVE.IT CONTINUED ON THESE DATES DEC.10/16/19/22/24/JANUARY 6/9/10/14/16/22/25/ BUT THE PROBLEM IS NOW OCCURRING TWICE DAILY.I HAVE CONTINUED COMMUNICATING WITH *** HE GAVE ME TWO LOCATIONS IN THE LATTER PART OF DECEMBER. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO *** TRUCK REPAIR. *** THE MECHANIC HOOKED UP THE COMPUTER TO DIAGNOSE THE CODES HE STATED THAT IT HAS BEEN REGISTERING A LOT OF CODE F AND SAID IT WOULD COST 2800.00 TO REPAIR. I CONTACTED *** ABOUT THE COST OF THE REPAIR.*** SAID THAT THE OWNER OF THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT PAY. I APPEALED TO PAY 1/2 THE COST. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE AND WOULD NOT HELP ME. I BELIEVE WE AS CONSUMERS NEED HELP.
We called and talked to *** on 2/12/20 at length. On the phone with me was *** our salesman. We listened to his thoughts on the situation and I was involved along the way in the process. At Riverside truck we do a process that virtually no other dealer does on their used trucks. We send them to outside shops to have them checked over, smoke tested , computer checked on the engine and road tested. We always provide that information to the customers. Before that we had to pick up the truck from Texas and that was about 1500 miles away. There were no problems reported by the transportation company and there were no fault codes reported on the ECM of the engine when checked by Colton Truck Terminal garage.
We do sell all our vehicles As-Is and it is indicated on the State form as well as out paperwork. We also offer paid Warranty programs to customers and *** declined that also.
When we were first advise that *** was having some problems and was looking for a place to see what was wrong we fist had him talked to Colton and when they could not address the Eaton/Fuller transmission we searched around for another vendor we were able to identify *** in San Bernardino. *** went on vacation and was delayed in taking it into them to see what the problem might be. When he did take it in to *** he was told that it needed a clutch. That was report back to *** and I then Called *** to ask what the situation was and tried to get an understanding of what the problem was and what the fix was. *** at *** indicated that sometimes in the progression in wear on these transmissions a spring will fall out of the clutch and it is usually a symptom of the clutch being near the end of its life. It needed to be replaced.
I sure understand the situation with the customer and because we do spend the money to check things out before we sell them we feel bad too. Because we spend the money checking them we have very rarely had any problems. It is usually engine sensors on these new emission trucks if anything. Because we do feel bad we have offered to make a policy adjustment to *** in the amount of $1000.00 toward him getting it fixed. That is what we are willing to do to help him out. we are waiting for a response from ***.
I think that *** and I both wished that he had taken the Warranty for 6 months that cost $1800 . he could have put it into the financing. That point is irrelevant now.
