Last spring we called RDI to do routine maintenance on our air conditioner.
This is something we try to do every year and we have called RDI to do the work for quite a few years.
On May 6 2015 Steve S[redacted] came out to do the maintenance work.
After a while he comes into the house to tell my wife that:
The fuses are bad.
The fan motor in the condenser is shot.
And the condenser its self is no good.
And the part that was just over the top was, Steve said "it was probably hit by lightning last winter".
This last claim raised the red flags up high!!
Steve said he was going to call someone else to come over and check things out, so Rhett M[redacted] came over (very quickly I might add) and checked things out, then wrote out a bid for a new unit for $2900.00 installed.
Add $275.87 for a lifetime compressor warranty.
When I came home that night and was given all of this information, I was more than a little suspicious (especially the lightning thing).
I'm no expert but I know enough to check: A---the circuit breaker, it was "on".
B---the fuse box.
Several years ago I needed to change the fuses because one had blown for an unknown reason.
This is a weather tight box (for obvious reasons)on the side of the house. Once I pulled the fuses I knew instantly these were not the fuses I put in when I changed them, they were rusted and the labels were completely faded.
I went down to Home Depot and bought two new fuses and installed them, in less than five minutes ice cold air was coming out of the ducts!
The next day I called [redacted] and scheduled a time for them to come out and check the unit out.
Because of their work load the could not come out until the first part of August.
They came out and spent a couple of hours checking things out and finally came to the conclusion that "everything is working perfectly and there is nothing to fix".
Now the cooling season is over and our air conditioning unit has worked all summer with no problems what-so-ever.
Just a side note; we also installed a new furnace two years ago because we were told (by an RDI service tech), that our heat exchanger was cracked.
I was skeptical at that time but it was winter, it was cold, and the furnace was in pieces and scattered all over the basement floor.
We have been a customer for a long time, right? Lets trust them.
The tech, as we were told, was prohibited by law to put it back together again.
$3000.00 for the new one.
In all I am very disappointed as a long time customer to be possibly scammed by a local company.
Review: RDI called me and offered a furnace preventive checkup for winter. they came and did that service and said that everything was ok, Then when I turned furnace on it would turn on. They sent another
man out & he said the control board was not communicating with the starter and that I needed a new control board at a cost of $400.00. I paid it but I think if their was something wrong they should have said some thing on the original visit. I think that this was just a way to charge me for something that was was not broken to begin with. The furnace was working perfectly before ther man came originally.Desired Settlement: I don't know what is usually done in a case like this but something should be done. NOTHING was wrong before they messed with it.
