I had a call from the customer a few months saying that their small retaining wall had fallen apartWe had constructed two walls, one was a small decorative one and one was larger wallI told him I would come by and take a look at it, so I didI noticed the small wall had moved down the hill but
was still intactI went to look at larger wall and it had also moved a little down-hillI called him and told him small wall was the least of his problem because that wall basically only had cosmetic issuesI made him aware that the large wall had moved quite a bit and told him I had never really seen this issue beforeI told him to have an engineering company come to look at itI called an engineering firm and they came out and looked and it and said it looked like a global stability issue, they seemed reluctant to get in the middle of it at first, but I stuck with themThey said it seems the ground had been overly saturated due to rain and caused the soil to be wet and move down the hillI was told there was the same situation a couple of houses down so I went to look at itIt basically looked like a pond in their yardI tried telling the homeowner that this didn’t seem to be workmanship issueI felt horrible for the circumstanceThe engineering firm said it could be reconstructed if they let the ground dry outI would be willing to do that, but did not warranty the job, so I could not cover the cost
