On Dec 12,2016 Mrs. [redacted] brought her 2008 BMW X3 to our shop after a 3rd party had replaced the expansion tank & thermostat on her cooling system. Mrs. [redacted] requested that we bleed her coolant system. Upon the initial inspection, we found that the vehicle had the incorrect coolant in it. We...

informed her that before we bleed the system we have to flush the cooling system and add the proper fluid. Mrs. [redacted] agreed to this procedure.  During the bleeding procedure we were waiting for the electric fan to activate while the vehicle was running. The electric fan is supposed to activate once the vehicle reaches full operating temperature to regulate temperature. At this point - before the cooling fan activated - the expansion tank which had recently been installed on the vehicle by a 3rd party opened at the seam and released the coolant. This is common on after-market poor quality parts. At this point we informed Mrs. [redacted] of the events that had transpired and that a new expansion tank would need to be installed.  As Mrs. [redacted] had the expansion tank which failed recently installed by a 3rd party, she had informed us of her decision to tow the vehicle back to the 3rd party who installed the expansion tank. As a courtesy, we elected not to charge her for the coolant and the time we spent on her vehicle. We have a policy where we only charge customers for the completion of repairs and resolution of issues related to such repairs.  This was the first time that this vehicle and customer visited our facility. As a courtesy we perform a thorough visual inspection of the vehicle for first time visits. We noticed and informed Mrs. [redacted] that her vehicle had additional issues. The coolant level light was on when the system was full. The check engine light was on. The air bag light was on. The traction control light was on. As a courtesy we performed a complementary scan of the electrical systems and found codes for the electric fan and electric coolant water pump issues. Such a scan is usually compensated for by 1 hour of labor at a rate of $100/hr. We feel that we have gone above and beyond and exceeded our capacity to help Mrs. [redacted], incurring considerable costs without charging Mrs. [redacted] for them, and we are being blamed for the failure of repairs performed by a 3rd party. Upon inquiries, Mrs. [redacted] did not offer any information regarding the 3rd party and their previous interactions with this vehicle.  While we do not feel that we hold any responsibility for the failures of the parts installed by a 3rd party, we are willing offer in good faith the consideration of $150 which Mrs. [redacted] is requesting as a conclusion to this matter and to our business dealings with Mrs. [redacted]. We make this offer in defense of our reputation and good name which is built upon trust and building long-standing relationships with our clientele. In accepting this offer we see this matter and any further reference to it as resolved and assert that we no longer wish to continue any business dealings with Mrs. [redacted]. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.  Sincerely, [redacted]
