I was suspicious when They called My number and knew My name to begin with.Yes They seemed a bit pushy as well. I said I would donate $20., which is the least I could do for real Officers, but after checking these People out I say no. I do not give credit or debit card info up over the phone without first knowing Who They are, the Fella on the phone seemed a bit persistent so I said mail a package. Like Others I wanted to check Them out 1st, I do not trust these Folks.
Look into it before you donate!
I had the same experience as other people did. I went to the web site, they do not give money to fallen officers families or officesrs period. This money is for political purposes only. Do not give.
I also heard from these people - and they started out with the $95, and the guy kept saying as we lowered the amount - "Are you comfortable with that amount" I settle on $15 and he then transferred me to the gal who also wanted my CC info which I did not provide and said I wanted a donation letter - and then she asked me to add an additional $5 - to which I said no - I received the letter very quickly and when I opened it the donation said $25. So I came here to check it out and I find others having the same experience. Those who donate - beware - I am not sending them anything and I am hoping they will call so I can tell them they are SCAM artists.
Do not provide them with your credit card information. This is clearly a scam.
I had the same experience as Erika -- Last week I got a call from this organization and the guy asked for a donation to help support fallen officer's families and legislation to help police (and I assumed it was for police in my state). I felt pressured into it so I said sure and he starting listing the donation options -- $95, $85, and $75! I was like whoooa sorry I didn't realize the commitment was so high, I can't afford that. He then said that's fine what would you feel comfortable with and I said $25. He said he'd transfer me to someone to send my donation packet out, so I figured I could figure out later if I really wanted to donate. He transferred me to a woman who immediately asked for my credit card info. I was very taken aback but was going to give it to her until I thought for a second that I shouldn't give my card number to this potential scam. So she said sure, she could send me the donation papers. When it arrived, I realized it wasn't even something specific to my state and looked into it online and guess what? This org is sketchy as heck! I'm so glad I didn't donate. Look into it before you donate!
I just received a phone call from these folks, it sounded extremely suspicious so I kept them on the line while googling them, particularly since even legitimate police, veteran, and first responder charities often have mediocre percentages of the donated funds actually making it to the people we're hoping to help. This article confirmed my suspicions: https://publicintegrity.org/politics/iupa-leorf-police-union-charity-telemarkete...⇄ /> It is acceptable for a non-profit to have quite a bit of overhead when they can show evidence that this model is effective and that they are still having a worthy impact on society or in the community. It is even acceptable for most of the funds raised to go back into fundraising, but only when fundraisers are also performing the essential functions of recruiting members and spreading issue awareness (for example, door-to-door canvasses on a political or environmental issue, especially if they are conducting a letter-writing campaign or other outreach effort.)
This association simply does not fit the bill. If you still want to give, I would investigate further to find a charity that deserves your support. This list might be a good place to start, but always do your homework first: https://www.policeone.com/police-heroes/articles/10-first-responder-charities-to...⇄
Didnt give me very much info, just wanted to know how much I could donate and was very upset when said to send me something in the mail and would look at it. I thought I was talking to a police officer. He didnt say he was, but the way he talked he acted like he was. When he transferred me to who I thought was going to get my address the woman also immediately asked for my credit card. She at first told me that I had to give it to her, that's the only way they could take the donation. I told her that was the only way I would send anything. i'm glad looked into it before I set anything.
This organization fraudulently bills by mail and falsely claims that I have made a pledge. I never pledge (over the phone or in any other way), especially to an organization like this. I would not pay this, of course, but this slimy practice seems fraudulent.
They have also called for my payment on this fraudulent claim requesting credit card information...when I told them "NO" they sent a bill via mail.
I received a phone call 30 minutes ago. The male caller identified himself as a fund raiser for the Police Officers Support Association and asked whether I would consider to donate to the organization. In the affirmative, the association would mail out a donation kit.
Considering the need to support our first responders, I said yes, I will look at it and I was transfered to a female contractor to verify my mailing address. Instead of the verification, the contractor asked immediately for my credit card which I would certainly not provide to an entity unknown to me.
She became very pushy and when I asked her whether the association has non-profit status, she was evasive, essentially not confirming the non-profit status. I went to the associations website. There are no links to donate, no information about the causes funded through donations etc. It is totally unclear to me what type of organization or business this association is. Clearly this was a quite suspicious phone call.
