Very helpful and great people. I had detailed conversations with them and they helped me explain all aspects of the process. I wanted to build a home and it was great to have them explain everything. I am currently still searching but If I decide to build then I would do it with them only. They are very knowledgeable.
Patagonia Construction replaced our roof in February in New England. Everyone involved in the project was courteous. The quote process was quick and transparent. Work started on the day promised. The crew treated our home as if it were their own. All issues that arose in the project were dealt with promptly. The quality of the work is excellent, the site was left spotless. The final bill was exactly as quoted.
I would rate Patagonia zero stars if I could. Several of the homes on their website were by *** Construction. Check the *** website. They showed us a home as a sample home that was actually built by ***. At least one of the two references given to us was the wife of Unmesh. We discovered this by looking up her number. Unmesh has several other companies with Patricio and also has one with his wife. These are just some of the lies Patagonia/Unmesh engaged is in in order to fool us into signing a contract with them. Don’t believe it. Also some of the reviews on here may be from people associated with their other business - ***. Do not trust their website. Also, when you see the person on the barn with the green sweatshirt on their site On the homepage, the Patagonia logo was photoshopped on. The same picture can be found later on the site with a different image on it. Do not trust Patagonia at all.
BUYER BEWARE! Patagonia Construction misrepresented themselves to us and is not the full service general contractor they claimed to be.
We contracted with Patagonia to build a custom residential home. My wife and I decided to work with Patagonia given their A+ Revdex.com rating, their nice website, meeting their principals, and reviewing previous homes they purported to build. Unfortunately, our experience working with Patagonia since contracting with them has been horrendous. Work eventually halted early during construction – during site work and foundation hole excavation. Thankfully, we discovered their false and deceptive practices early in the project, which limited the amount of damages they could do. Now we want to make other consumers aware of their practices and deception, so that potential residential customers can make fully educated decisions on their construction projects.
Here is a summary of the challenges we experienced and the deceptive practices we observed:
- Despite marketing themselves as a full-service general contractor and communicating to us their deep experience in construction, we found out that they do not have experience in construction. They did not have employees (at least available to our project) who were certified as a builder or even as a construction supervisor.
- During the contract negotiation phase, we were told by a Principal owner that they had tradespeople on staff, which enabled them to control schedule and quality. Based on our project, we saw no evidence that anyone (outside of the Principal) from Patagonia was involved in our project. In fact, without notifying us, Patagonia completely outsourced our project to another general contracting firm. Furthermore, it is our understanding, they instructed their subcontractors to not wear their company branded clothing when at our building site. We presume this was because Patagonia may have wanted to hide the company that the workers were employed by to ensure we did not realize it was non-Patagonia personnel working on the project.
- Within weeks of construction starting, Patagonia notified us of a change order that represented nearly a 10% cost increase to the overall contract; the change order related to additional fill needed for the site that any competent contractor would have foreseen and included in the price of the contract. As a point of reference, Patagonia was given the current and final site elevations during contract negotiations. Furthermore, when we checked their fill price estimate, we found that their estimate was approximately 300% higher than multiple providers that we found in the area. Additionally, Patagonia was unable to explain why they needed the fill, how much they would eventually need, and provided no transparency to the material and labor costs of the change order.
- A second change order was also given to us in this time-period for an erosion control fence. Again, Patagonia’s estimate was approximately 300% higher than a service provider that we found on our own and whom we paid directly. Additionally, we discovered through our own outreach that Patagonia was going to use the same contractor we had found for them. The erosion control fence provider gave us the quote that they had given Patagonia, so Patagonia’s substantial mark-up was evident.
- At this point, we were highly suspicious of Patagonia, but still trying to work with them to complete our project. The final straw was when Patagonia claimed to us that they had completed a contractual stage of the project – digging the foundation hole and receiving town approval. Patagonia communicated to us that the work was done and approved by the town and then requested paying for the work stage for over $41,000. Patagonia also pressured us to pay faster than the contract term which was already relatively short and threatened with significant late fees if there was any delay. After complying and paying for the work, we grew suspicious about the quality of work, we contacted the town inspector who told us that the inspection had not been approved and that the foundation hole was not suitable for concrete pouring.
- At this point, it was clear to us that Patagonia did not appear to be a competent builder; had (unbeknownst to us) completely outsourced our project to a contractor that did not have reasonable experience with a project of our scale; and that Patagonia was using deceptive and fraudulent practices to extract the most amount of money from us that they could.
- After terminating our contract, Patagonia has since been unwilling to cooperate or return any of our down payment or provide any transparency as to the work that they performed and its associated costs. Not only was it enough for them to take our full down payment, to take full payment for every work request that they made (despite not doing the work), but they also tried to derail our project after our seperation by submitting a spurious lien on our property.
To potential customers - please by very cautious of Patagaonia, their principals, and their related side businesses. They completely misrepresented themselves to us, did not perform the work that they billed for, lied to us about town inspections, and when they did work it was sub-standard.
