I was overcharged for services rendered and my property was damaged. The business refused to provide me with an invoice justifying the price.
On July 21st 2017 I brought my car to OTS Mobile Audio in Oldsmar FL to have some stereo equipment installed in my car. I was seeking to have 4 amplifiers (zapco c2k 9.0, 6.0, 6.0, Mcintosh MC420) installed in my trunk, an equalizer (zapco sx sl ii) installed in my dashboard, install 2 tweeters (Rainbow Cal 28) and run some new wire to speakers installed under the seats of my car (BMW XXX XXXX). It was supposed to take 2 days. Their hourly rate is 80$ hr. I had a budget of 1200. I provided the installer with the owners manual for all the equipment.
I picked up my car on July 28th 2017. When I arrived to pick up my car there was no music at all. After trouble shooting (he already had my car for 7 days) there was some sound coming out of my speakers, but without getting technical, all the settings on all the equipment installed were incorrect, some to damaging levels.
Chris claimed that the equalizer was incompatible with the system and suggested I purchase an Arc Audio PSC to better integrate and use as an EQ.
The EQ was to be installed in a dash trim panel. I purchased a new trim panel so I could keep the original. Chris damaged the first one and I allowed him to use the original to get it done. When I finally saw how the EQ was installed I was horrified, it was literally hot glued and siliconed onto my trim panel. This is a 1200$ piece of vintage equipment that I brought to him with mounting brackets.
In my trunk there were 2 sound conditioning devices hanging freely, my extra battery was left exposed and the overall job was very poor. Chris assured me that we would get everything taken care of and that these things take time, sometimes months.
Chris, the installer attempted to charge me 3000$, and then settled on 2800$. I paid 2500 on a wells fargo credit card and 300 on my TD debit card. I was given no invoice to account for this amount. I paid because I'm not one for confrontation, I had to go to work and maybe, somehow I could get 2800$ worth of work. Car audio installation is similar to automotive repair; certain jobs take certain amount of time, give or take a bit, and you pay an hourly rate.
So I leave , upset , but it's going to be taken care of and I have some music to listen to. I'm not 3 miles from shop and my music shuts off. I've got nothing but bass. Call the shop, i'm told Chris is going on vacation, there is nothing they can do until next week.
Next week bring the car back. I wait next door at Ruby Tuesday for 4 hours for them to install the ARC Audio PSC, a digital coaxial cable and hopefully get the sound tuned and the settings fixed. The controller was put where my ashtray is supposed to be, it wasn't mounted and I couldn't close the ashtray cover. Chris said " why would you want it closed?" Again, there was no sound, I had to trouble shoot it to get things working. But again, nothing was set up properly and everything sounded terrible. Chris charged me 100$ in labor. For a grand total of 2900$ in labor.
Disgusted, I realized the installer did not have the ability to complete my system. I then closely examined everything only to find a myriad of problems that would take some time to fix.
I contacted the owner CHRIS by email to request a detailed invoice to account for the hours and the total amount. After his reluctance I then detailed my entire experience, requesting that they take care of the equipment they damaged (zapco eq and bmw trim panel) and refund me 1500$. After contacting 5 other area installers and comparing their rates.
After several email exchanges it was clear I was going to need to go about resolving this issue some other way.
I want a refund of 1500$ . I want my EQ replaced or repaired. I want a new trim panel.
Mr.,
Before we start with any custom project, such as yours, we always make sure that we are on the same page with an agreed upon price. We never surprise our customers with anything that was not agreed upon prior to starting the job.
For your project, we did a daily labor rate instead of hourly. It works out much better for you as you were not charged for every single hour spent on your car. We Estimated that it would take us 4 full days for your complete install, not 2 as you had stated. (which actually, it took longer), that is how we came up with the $2500 in labor, which you agreed to, and paid for without any questions. This did not include any extra diagnostic time we spent on figuring out why your old, defective used equipment wasn't working properly.
Unfortunately we cannot warranty any equipment that was not purchased through OTS, especially used. Chris spent a whole day trying to diagnose the issue we were having with your EQ. After talking to tech support, and Robert Zeff, the man who designed that system, they determined that the source of the problem was your defective EQ. The original designers of Zapco, also informed us, that the setup you were trying to do, was not going to work properly, but did give us some recommendations to try. (setting all internal crossovers in EQ to flat, etc.) That is why your sytem was having noise, and why it shut off soon after leaving our shop. After Chris had explained to you exactly what was happening, you then remembered that you were previously having issues with that same EQ in other vehicles.
We sold you the new PSC Controller, at a highly discounted price. ($250 instead of $369) The install on the PSC controller was temporary, as you guys had agreed on. We explained how it was too large to fit in that ashtray location if you wanted the door to close. You had agreed to ship us a new dash bezel, and we were going to custom mount the PSC controller in place of the defective EQ, and ship it back to you, at no additional charge.
We are more than willing to fix any issues, and spend as much time as needed to get to system all tuned. Custom stereos, like yours, aren't as straightforward or as basic as a radio and 4 speakers. As we had discussed, high end systems with processors often take multiple trips to get the tuning right, which at the time, you had completely agreed with, and understood. We are also willing to replace the trim panel that was damaged. I would need the exact year, make and model and VIN # of your car, and a picture of the old trim panel, so I can get the correct one ordered.
You never sent us the trim panel to be modified, or you never came back for us to eradicate any minor issues you were having. Such as swapping speaker wires, and doing a tune on your system.

These guys charge by the hour. I need an hourly breakdown of work done on my car. Equipment was damaged, I have the equipment in the condition it was returned to me, I want it replaced.
The "custom work" you claim to have done consists of one board with 8 holes in it and one EQ that was never installed properly.
My equipment was hooked up very wrong and when I came back for you to finish the job I was charged for labor. You keep insisting that I come back and let you fix "little things" , so you can charge me again and again for shoddy work. Your'e installer delivered my vehicle not once but twice with a non-working radio, no sound at all. How could I put any faith in you people to even touch my equipment again.
I am aware you do not wish to provide me with a detailed labor break down because that would be the same as admitting you overcharged me. Or am I paying for 20 hours of your guy bumbling with my equalizer? Whose bumbling not only failed to correctly install the EQ but in fact damaged it.
I have pictures of the "custom" hardware all installed in my car within 2 days of you having my car (pics sent from the installer) So i'm curious what time was spent on after the hardware was installed because no tuning or setup of any kind was done. Not even something as basic as setting the levels on the amplifiers.
Some fun quotes from the installer.
"You're doors are relatively easy to work on"
"Running wires through your car is not that bad"
"It took no time to "design" this amp rack it's the only way the amps would fit"
Regarding my EQ "That thing is hot glued and siliconed into that trim panel, I don't think it's ever coming out"
That's the pc of equipment I want replaced. Along with the trim panels needlessly wasted.
Regarding the problems with the system" You should sell all your amps, their worth a lot of money, and buy new amps that I'm familiar with" Mind you, he suggested this after charging me 2800 for the install so I guess he already took me as a fool and was trying to further part me from my money.
