I wasn't feeling well and went to the Mount Sinai clinic to get checked by a doctor. Since I only have travelers insurance I was told I needed to pay the bill upfront , before I could see the doctor. I paid $125 on the spot and then saw the doctor. There was no medication prescribed, nor was there any followup treatment.
Two months later I received a message saying I have an outstanding balance of $315 - When I called the billing department, they said they need to contact the clinic to resolve that issue since it seems like a human error on the clinc's side. I was told it would take up to 14 business days. I called again after a month and was told they still haven't received a reply and they would send another request.
It has been over a month now, and I was told by the billing department they would not escalate the matter until they have made at least 3 attempts, in which each time I have to call and check if there was a reply and if there wasn't I have to ask them to try again. Meaning only after 3 attempts, 32 business days minimum, they would escalate the issue and even then I can't get a reply as to what will be the result.
I kept getting the same reply from the billing department that it was an issue with the way the clinic sent my invoice - That shouldn't be my responsibility and I should not be held accountable for it.

I chose Dr Harry F at Mount Sinai Beth Israel because he participated in my insurance plan BCBS and thought my bill would be limited to my copay. I met with the doctor twice. Before I made my appointment I called to verify his participation. I visited Dr F, thinking I only would be responsible for my copay. Afterwards I was subsequently billed $246.67 each for the office visit/clinic visits on 4/*/18 and 7//18 .
I was never informed of a clinic charge. I later found out that as of November 2017, the is a supplemental charge/split billing for the hospital facility and the doctor. I have for numerous years visited Mount Sinai at *** and do not and have never incurred clinic charges
I think it is the responsibility of the hospital to inform patients when they make the appointment before visiting the doctor that such a charge exists and to have the receptionist at the facility inform the patient.
The hospital billing department says that a notice was included with the forms, HIPPA etc that patients are given to sign. I don't remember reading such paperwork.
I would think that many people must be unaware that they will be charged clinic fees and it is the responsibility especially since this is a new policy to inform patients at the time of scheduling that they will be charged 6 times what they thought would be charged.
