I was a student at MSUN until 2015. In 2017 I received a letter from a collection agency stating I owe 958.61. Prior to this I had been garnished on tax return to pay the debt from 2015. I paid this collection agency (*** account # ***) in full.
In December 2019 I accepted a job with the Montana University system. In order to get my transcripts from MSUN, which I needed to get the job, I had to pay an additional 200. When I spoke to the billing department about this they told me it was fees that the collection agency didn't address. I paid that total in full. I also received my transcripts and am now employed with the Montana University system.
Today 2/6/2020 I checked my mail and received a letter from another collection agency (*** account # ***) Stating that I owe 814.80 and "They have made several attempts to contact me".
This is not true. I have already paid this debt. When I spoke to the business office in December, my account was paid in full. The account number for both collections is the same. I have never received any calls, emails, bills from Credit Control before today.
My state tax return has not been garnished since I paid the original 958.61.
Montana State University Northern became aware by the filing of this complaint that Ms. had been incorrectly billed by a contracted collection agency. In June 2019, MSUN asked the agency to close the account and sent to account to another collection agency. The university assumed that the account was closed as it requested. Ms. has paid any outstanding amount on her account. The university has notified the collection agency in question of its mistake and has again directed the agency to close the account. Ms. has no outstanding balance with the university. The demand was incorrectly made by the collection agency and was made without the university's knowledge. MSUN will send a separate letter to Ms. clarifying that she does not have any outstanding debt with the university.
