Review: My family contracted with the Slocumb Law Firm to represent us in my wife's SSA disability claim. The deal was that they would act on our behalf until such time as an award was achieved. A description of the events that unfolded over the last 18 months (as of June2014)is as follows:1. I contacted the DC office of the Mike Slocumb Law Firm (the Firm) in February 2013 to request assistance with filing a disability claim for my wife who was gravely ill.2. I was assigned an attorney as a POC. April 2013 - the Firm contacted me to tell me that they had just completed the filing process. It should not have taken that long. Late 2013 - Adult Disability questionnaires were filled out and dropped off at the office personally by me. January 2014 - received a letter from SSA dated January 7, 2014; the Firm was copied as well. Early April 2014 - I contacted the number on the letter to obtain status as the Firm had not been in contact with me and was told that the application was not complete and that no supporting documentation (medical records) had been received.3. I called the Firm and was told that the original attorney had left the Firm and that they were trying to figure things out and was asked if I would give the Firm two weeks to get back to me. The Firm blamed the government shutdown for the failure. I was not contacted and repeated messages requesting status went unanswered.4. I contacted all my wife's doctors and requested records be sent to the fax number SSA gave. 5. I formally terminated our agreement in May 2014Slocumb had done nothing since submitting the questionnaires. The inaction and runaround I got from the Firm was unacceptable. In June 2014 I received word that our claim was approved and that payment was being sent to Slocumb as they never filed the termination paperwork they said they would. They kept the money for essentially submitting an application having not faithfully representing my family as they were contracted to do.Desired Settlement: Since the firm did file the paperwork I request a 50/50 split of the representation fee as I did most of the leg work. I suggested this to my contact at the firm but was told that since SSA awarded the fee to the firm they were keeping the payment.
Very helpful review. Thank you.
