I am a caregiver to my Wounded Warrior sonSince he has Severe Traumatic Brain Injury I was appointed his FiduciaryThe VA accused me of misusing his fundsThey went from $16k in May, 2015, to $66k in June to $149k in OctoberI began searching for someone to help me and was having a hard time finding someoneIn November I found Mitchell HowieHe was a God-send!! He led me through the process of appealing the decisionHe knew things to say and ask about that I never would have knownHe was able to find the right people at the VA to speak toI never found a VA person close to being near to anyone who could help me! MrHowie also had to deal with the company who bonded meThe VA was going to get the money from them and they were about to pay the VA (which in turn meant the bond company would come back on me to repay them for paying the VA) until MrHowie told them not to pay because the amount would be reducedI am so glad he told them to wait to pay! MrHowie and I sent various documents and receipts and proofWell actually, I just faxed or scanned items to MrHowie and he did the restThe VA lowered the amount of misuse several timesAt last count, the beginning of April, 2016, the amount of misuse was a little more than $15kWe were happy that the amount was lowered from over $149k to $15k!! We discussed my filing bankruptcy so I wouldn't have to pay the VA any money backWe knew how the system worked even though we knew that I was innocent I can't begin to describe how full of stress I was during all that time! I couldn't sleep or eatI became depressedI didn't want to leave the houseEven to take my son to the doctors at the VA was mentally exhaustingI was afraid everyone there would think I was abusing my son! I had quit a job I loved and made great money at to be a full time, 24/7/caregiver to my sonThe VA made me feel like trash by accusing me of misusing my incapacitated sons money! I knew I hadn't done anything wrongI had every single penny accounted for but the VA wouldn't talk to me about itBut, they talked to MrHowie! On April 16th, 2016, I received the "Final Misuse Determination" which stated that there was NO MISUSE found! Not only that, but the new amount I was going to owe the VA was now $0.00!!!! If it weren't for MrHowie I seriously have no idea what would have become of me! He was kind, caring and concerned for meHe was always on my sideI've dealt with the VA since and I couldn't navigate the system to help myselfI know MrHowie won't consider himself a Hero, but that's what he is to my family! He not only saved my mind, he also saved my Spirit
