Add at least +40% to your initial estimate. And that’s validated by 3 other people I bumped into in Santa Fe that bought from LA Puerta.
After design a hand sketch (rather than a CAD drawing) will be issued to you for your approval and found these sketches to be fraught with errors despite my attention to detail. Numbers get transposed or can be totally incorrect and this cost me dearly, twice.
Despite being in the high-end kitchen cabinet business they don’t do well with integrated panel appliances so be sure to pay attention here with manufactures specifications and drawings and ensure La Puerta understand them.
Get your hardware selected and resolved early, they buy the hardware inefficiently through middlemen suppliers which means your getting fleeced on your hardware.
Expect to wait it out with 18+ week lead times, minimum. Once your in their system you will have to chase them to ensure your order doesn’t slip.
Get all your components in for a one-time production or you will wait another 18 weeks for even simple additional items to be fabricated.
Careful with their signature La Puerta finishes. They can look great in some spaces but most of them are kitsch and cheap looking. We wound up having to provide them with the Benjamin Moore Advanced paint which we paid for out of pocket with no deduct against their signature finish process.
On a $30K kitchen cabinet package they will argue with you over insignificant things. For example, although our trash pull out is technically a drawer they didn’t install the hardware making a huge stink over a $40 piece of hardware we had to buy and install ourselves.
April 5, Revdex.com Jefferson StNE Ste A Albuquerque, NM Attention: *** *** Trade Practice Consultant Re: ID # *** - La Puerta Originals Dear ***, This letter is in response to the message sent to you from La Puerta OriginalsWe don't mean to be unkind, but we never met or spoke to Melissa C***We only dealt with her husband, ScottNone of what was said about the choice of wood is accurateI myself, discussed the wood with Scott on the phoneWe gave him a sample of our board which was knotty pine and agreed on birch or oak woodWe said that knotty pine knots split open and crack which makes the board useless to useWe were also not told of the water base finishWe would have looked elsewhere to do our boards because a water based finish would never workIn addition, the knotty pine boards only last for or months at the longest, and they only cost between $or $At first, Scott said that there would be a three month wait, until the project could be startedThen he called and said that they had an employee who could do it on the side in a weekHe never mentioned a water base finishWe were never told or saw their terms or conditionsMy wife was not desperate when she went there nor did she indicate that no one was willing to help herShe went there because I had already spoken to Scott about doing this projectShe asked what they would charge and was willing to pay what they askedNo one quibbled about the chargeSince we did not receive the product we ordered and paid for, we would like to be reimbursedThank you for your attention to this matter*** ***
We explained in detail to this client that we are a custom manufacturer of doors and did not do projects like this. And, we do not offer birch or oak "new wood" as material. We do not offer any petroleum based products in our manufacturing process, which was also explained to the client...
and told to her specifically that we would finish the board with a water-based sealant. It is in our terms and conditions! The client was desperate for help with the slider board for her paralyzed husband and indicated that she could not find anyone to help her. Because she was so desperate, we checked with several of our bench carpenters to see if they could make this slider board on their own time and with their own material. One carpenter out of the 15 we employ was able to make the board - at home over a weekend. We paid him for his own time and his material because we thought it was the right thing to do. We also did not charge our customary overhead and profit with this project. We regret that they are unhappy as we went well beyond what we do as a matter of business. It will be the last time we ever go out of our way to do anything like that again. Melissa C[redacted], President
