Review: My son [redacted] is 9-years old [redacted] boy. This summer he attended Kulanu camp which was advertised as a place for the kids with special needs. It was determined that [redacted] should have one-to-one assistance which is $750 per week or $150 per day, assuming that the staff is professional and trained enough to handle [redacted] kids. [redacted] was looking forward for the camp because of the pool (it was advertised so).But in reality when the camp started I started getting calls from [redacted] asking me to pick [redacted] up from the camp earlier because the staff is not able to handle him. My son had never been at the pool because the staff was not able to handle him. And for the very last day of camp I was required to keep my son home because it was a trip day and the staff was not able to handle him again. And when I asked for a refund for that day, I was refused.Kulanu charged me for the services they did not provide, it is not fair and not professional.[redacted].Desired Settlement: $150 refund for the services Kulanu did not provide - the trip day when my son was required to stay home.

Response:
Camp Discovery is a camp for individuals with special needs.
It operates full and partial summer programs and [redacted] enrolled her son in
the second session of the camp season 2013.
During the 14 days that [redacted]’s son, * (initials are being used to
protect confidentiality) was in camp he required a 1:1 and frequently a 2 to 1
counselor/student ratio. His behavior was unpredictable whereby he could be
very compliant and then within moments begin grabbing at counselors, scratching
their hands and arms, trying to bite and injure via head butting. These outbursts would last minutes to
sometimes an hour or more. In order to maintain * in the program, he was
provided with the camps strongest and most experienced staff. When he was
unable to participate within the larger camp group he was provided alternative activities
within small group or individually, such as gym time, music, drawing, or any
alterative which enabled him to calm, and remain engaged with his
counselors.
