I went to the hospital's clinic in Cle Elum for my first annual Medicare free Wellness visit
on July 16,2018, which the clinic said to me that they accept these appointments. The doctor wanted to run some routine tests to establish a baseline health. He said, "we won't count this visit as your free one, we'll make another appointment for the free visit after we get the
test results. My second appointment was on August 21, 2018.
The hospital, who apparently does the billing for the clinic, subsequently sent bills for both appointments. Not one bill for each, but two or three for each, while I was calling and talking to a billing person to try and straighten it out. I paid for the first bill. There must have been at least three calls when they refunded my payment and never sent another bill for either of the appointments. On November 5, 2019, I received a bill for both appointments again! I paid $191.40 for the first and when they sent a bill for the second visit I sent a note saying the second appointment was supposed to be a free Medicare Wellness visit. Today, I simply got another bill for the second visit. No reply to my note. I'm too frustrated to go through all of this again with them. It's not the money, it's just the confusing operation.
The Revenue Cycle team billed the services that were supported by the documentation in the medical record. The first visit was billed a second time after the HIM coding team reviewed the chart and determined a different visit level was appropriate. We corrected the billing to the insurance company and patient balance billing on the first date of service only. This resulted in a lesser amount due from the patient. Both visits have been reported correctly to insurance on a claim and cost-sharing from the insurance company billed to the patient. I was unable to support her claim that employees in my department spoke with her regarding questions about her billing.
Thanks,
