At the end of May I paid Idaho licenced contractor Jeff roughly half or $8000 of a home remodel job. $3700 of that was for material and the rest went to over half of his labor estimate. The total job was in his estimate about a month long, to finish and create a bedroom in the second story of our 1600 sqft home, plus add a stairway from ground floor. We noticed he had trouble visualizing our requests, although we shared photo examples. We requested drawings or simple sketches but he never deliver them. We proceeded thinking he would deliver since he spoke confidently. On day one we began to notice problems. First was a lack of any prep work, having no tarps to protect our beautifully just-remodeled home from construction debris, especially considering the attic has nasty decades-old loose fill insulation everywhere. So he then let huge piles of this insulation fall through the hole he created to cut stairs through, resulting in a large unprotected pile on the floor his crew just swept around. My wife noticed her skin itching, and finger swiping revealed that fiberglass filled dust was everywhere in the house. Next problem came when some cool old wood removed from the attic was dumped in the front yard. We had wanted it for other projects, but by next morning it was gone with no explanation.
Jeff and his two man crew quickly showed how inexperienced there framing was after I brought a 35 year pro to inspect progress. For starters, Jeff insisted on large new roof trusses? to help support what was a visually sound roof with just a little normal sag. But instead of tying them into the right spots with perfect cuts, he screwed them into the floor/ceiling joists putting a huge load on it, and criss-crossing them at the top instead of flush making them uneven for the drywaller, plus structurally weak. I could go on...
As we complained, on day 5 he wanted the remaining balance. I said no, half due on completion is standard. He decided to walk off the job after barley 5 full days, and won't return calls
