Patient, [redacted] self-directed to the JPS Urgent Care and was screened to our Emergency department for higher level care. The initial assessment indicates the patient has been using ETOH and marijuana. Patient was not required to, but took off his pants. A knife...
came out the top of a pocket. The patient was immediately informed the knife would need to be secured as weapons are not allowed in the ED, and he could pick up the knife when he was discharged. The tech left the room to get the knife secured and obtain a belongings bag to place the patients clothing. At no time did he remove anything else from the patient’s pants, and immediately returned them to the head of the patient’s bed. When he was being discharged the patient accused the staff of stealing $40.00 from his wallet. The nurse who spoke with the patient offered to assist him in looking for where the money could have been misplaced since he was in two locations while in the department. He refused any assistance and when she then offered to call our police officers to file a report he again refused. The patient was told when he was leaving where he could recover his knife and PD was called to meet him in the front lobby. The tech and nurse suggested the patient recheck his wallet or his pants pockets to see if he may have misplaced the money, but he refused. Both of the staff reported the patient again refused PD’s help in lobby to file a report and refused to recheck his wallet or pants for the money. The staff followed the appropriate process when a patient or visitor reports anything missing. They notified the team leader and the police department.
