My husband and I wanted to plant new trees in the backyard which is sloping and has nothing in it. We wanted spruce of some sort. When we hired a landscaper we discussed what we wanted and where we wanted it. He told us he purchased Norwegian spruce and would place them in our back yard. He also purchased hydrangeas and would place them alongside the north side of our home with hostas and two hydrangeas next to our garage. He would bring mulch and fill all the beds and the front beds, which already had plantings in them. He was to replant 3 oak trees which weren't planted correctly. This all took place nearly three weeks ago. Since then, everything that he planted is dead or dying because it was overmulched and planted incorrectly. The Norwegian spruce in the backyard looked like they came from a fire sale. They were never the nicest and we were charged top dollar. They never should have been planted this time of year anyway. We had a friend who is a landscaper come out to look at everything and give us a report. It was devastating. Nothing was done correctly. As said, overmulched. The mulch was garbage, mounded too high, the spruce weren't placed into holes deep enough, the holes weren't cleared of stones, clay or grass strips from digging the holes, so the trees will NEVER grow. The surrounding area has dirt all around it that was never cleared away. One of the oaks that was replanted was placed in an area where there is obvious runoff for rain and it died from overwatering. The other tree isn't growing well. Another on the front lawn has bugs and isn't growing well. The plants in the front bed had overmounded mulch and one plant developed a bee's nest. Another type of spruce began dying. Two types of miniature globe spruce should have been transplanted as they will overgrow. He claimed the nursery who sold him the trees trained him. That is an obvious lie and I've contacted them.
The business owner inspected the plantings. Even from a distance, he was able to see that all four pines that the business planted are still alive and doing fine. The plants up front suffered from a lack of watering. There wasn't a warranty provided for the plants or the trees. The consumer tore out the hydrangeas that were all doing fine, which was her own decision.
The business is sorry that the consumer is unhappy with the work. The business has provided services for many customers and has never had an unhappy customer until now.
I am rejecting this response because:
None of the plantings or placement of mulch was ever done correctly. I have attached a letter from a professional landscaper in the business for over 40 years, who evaluated the property step by step. You will see what was mentioned about the entire job. It is not based on what I liked or didn't like; it is based on fact. And, the fact is that John R isn't profession and doesn't know what he is doing. The fact he is blaming me for something he did is unforgiving and unprofessional.
I have included photos of the hydrangeas. You can see the root balls never took root because they were never planted correctly. Therefore, they all died.
Thank you.
Tell us why hHello, I would like to
address the issues that have been raised. I want to confirm that no trees were stolen.I provided all receipts to Mrs.. I talked with the owner from ***, ***, and he remembers the day we were there and purchased the trees.I have pictures of us marking out the parts for the trees and you were out there while we were spray painting them. You had told us that the trees looked nice when I showed them to you. I consulted with one of the nursery workers who helped provide instruction on how to plant the trees and what soil to use.The customer was very specific that she did not want a blue spruce because of a disease that is going around. She agreed to the trees we planted and was happy with them.We only use high quality mulch and always install it at 1-2 inches thick. We’ve used that mulch for a couple of years and never had a single complaint of its quality. She told us she was getting a generator and I believe that is the reason she removed the hydrangeas. We have never had a single plant die for any of our customers. We provide guidance on how to maintain them with water. Also, I sent over the receipts for the peat moss we used in the plants to confirm we properly fertilized them at installation. We score the bottom of the roots and I personally did that. I hope that this information can help bring this situation
to resolution. As you can see, I
consulted with the customer every step of the way to make sure they were
satisfied. I provided information on how
to care for the plants and that is their responsibility. Please let me know if you need anything else
from me.Sincerely,John R
I am rejecting this response because:
Nothing that has been mentioned by JJ's Beautification service is truthful. And, in fact, Mr. R wil not rectify one thing he has done to us, his customer.s that he took $3700 to do the job. He did not guarantee the trees. In his first discussion with me, he said he would remove the dead hydrangeas and replant new ones, as he guarantees those. He didn't show up to do that, and instead drove right past my home as I was removing most of the overpiled mulch from my front beds as it was smothering my existing plants. If he could drive by my home, then why not just come over and speak to me in person? This was used as fodder to fabricate a story that I didn't like the plants, so I ripped them out. The plants were DEAD after one week. The next discussion I had with him, he said that he didn't guarantee the hydrangeas. Now his story changed from a partial guarantee to none because he falsely claims I took out plants I didn't like. Enough is enough. Landscaping companies always guarantee their work up to one year. Obviously, Mr. R doesn't know this because he isn't a professional landscaper. His business isn't registered anywhere either. And, to treat customers this way is not favorable for anyone operating what they claim to be a bona fide professional service. He seems to be more interested in saying that WE are at fault for everything that he, in fact did to US for a very large sum of money. My husband is a Vietnam veteran who has disabilities; he is also retired and in his 70's. I am retired and in my late 60's also with spinal injury and disability. We are on a fixed income and don't have cash to throw around. We put our faith into Mr. R to do a good job and do it correctly. This certainly did not occur and he refuses to make things better for the customer. Does he do this to all his customers or only those who discover his ability to deliver quality work? He claims he is professional and does professional quality work, and yet it is visible to us and two professional landscaping companies that that is far from the truth.
I have now had two registered and professional landscaping services come to my home and look at the job Mr. R did. The first was ***'s company, who provided the two page evaluation for you to see. The second company, ***, located at ***, phone ***, have become our full time landscaping and lawn servicer. Their owner, ***, came to our property to evaluate what Mr. R had done, and reached the same conclusion as the previous professional landscaper, ***. Some of the comments were: poorly done, poor quality materials used (i.e. mulch), too much mulch piled up and smothering the plants, holes for the trees dug out improperly with clay, stones and grass strips thrown back into the holes, no planting soil in the holes and holes not the right size, dirt left all over the grass where the holes were dug, which began to smother the grass and ruin the grass, poor quality Norwegian spruce, if in fact, that's what they were, one of which died already due to the method of planting, and the others, which began to fail as well started showing signs of demise. Beds not shaped correctly, and more (as in Mr. lengthy evaluation)
My bed on the side of the house, where all of the hydrangeas were, died due to the same method of planting; the hydrangea root balls were dried, and never grew because they were improperly planted.
In my front beds, where there were already very expensive existing plants, we had the formation of a bee's nest, which required an exterminator come to get rid of the nest. The exterminating company also mentioned the mulch being too high and bulky as a cause of this bee's nest formation. The fact we had to hire and pay an exterminator was yet another expense associated with this improper and unprofessionally done landscaping work. The exterminator recommended, as did the landscaping companies, that all of this mulch be removed and replaced with better quality mulch and less of it. Also regarding the front beds, the shaping of the beds wasn't done correctly either. Among my plants in the front bed is a form of pine which had been growing and which also started to show signs of demise from the mulching, not lack of care or watering.
Mr. R told us about watering after we asked how to do it. It was not a detailed explanation either. Just water them several times a week, morning and evening, more when it's hot, don't overwater. And that was the extent of it. Mr. and *** both said that was incorrect. Norwegian spruce require watering morning and evening EVERY DAY and also require soaking hoses. Hydrangeas require the same. However, this is NOT the reason for the plant failures, as explained before. Why on earth would we NOT water anything that we paid for and allow it to die? That is the most divisive explanation I have ever heard from a person who considers himself to be a professional. My existing plants have been taken care of, so why wouldn't we take care of what Mr. R also planted? We have watered everything day and night all the time. In fact, our neighbors are witnesses to this.
Two days ago, ***'s company, ***, came to our home to completely redo the entire "job" Mr. R did. ***, the owner, was so appalled with what he saw, just as Mr. was. He wanted to know "who did this to your yard" and "how much did he charge you for such poor work"? "Nothing was done right here", "where did this mulch come from?, it is not something we would ever use and it's piled too high"..We had to spend over $2600 to correct the awful work attributed completely to Mr. R, who still contends that we, the consumers, didn't know what we were doing and destroyed his "professional work". The proof is in the photos I've already submitted and those from today. *** also said that he saw we had been taking care of our landscaping and yes, watering everything. Prior to doing our landscaping, they had been coming to cut our lawn intermittently prior to hiring them full time, and saw the entire job Mr. R did. Again, they saw that we were taking care of all the beds, trees and hydrangeas and watering them too.
Today, I reached out to ***, the landscaping company that Mr. R claims he purchased the Norwegian spruce from. The company told me that they CANNOT prove those receipts were for trees intended for my husband and I. They also told me that ALL of the trees Mr. R brought to us would have had labelling on them, not just ONE tree. The manager asked that I sent photos of the trees Mr R provided to us, to check the quality and to determine whether they would sell any such product to a customer and for the pricing listed. I've also left messaging for the owner, Mr. to return a call directly to me to discuss the sale of the trees and to view the photos I have submitted to their business. This is to determine if the trees Mr. R claims he purchased for us were actually were from ***. Also, when pricing of the trees was discussed, Mr. R said a medium sized tree would be $350. The label we found on the one tree was $325. The label also said the height was 6'. The trees provided to us were higher at nearly 7'. As I have not yet heard from the owner, ***, regarding any of this, I will submit further information pending my discussion with him.
I am attaching a photo of the trees Mr. R provided and the new ones *** just planted. You can see the difference in quality and justification for pricing.
