Customer brought the Suzuki GSmotorcycle in and it was barely running and almost impossible to get started. We removed the spark plugs and one of the plugs was literally dripping with oil. We put a bore scope in and saw damage to the cylinder wall which required disassembly to
see the extent of the damage. Called the customer about it and he approved disassembly. Once the bike was apart, we found that the cylinder, piston and rings were damaged beyond repair. We did extensive research to find parts and did not have any luck. The bike is a rare year old model and almost all parts are obsolete. We found a used cylinder that we were hoping we could make work, but it didn't. We charged him for disassembly of the bike to see what was wrong with the bike. We charged him for the cylinder we bought, but waived the machining fees. We had also special ordered an engine gasket set, that we only charged a restocking fee to send it back to our distributor. At that point, I started researching universal components (pistons, cylinder sleeves) that we might be able to make work on his bike but he had decided that he didn't want to put any more money in the bike, so we stopped working on it.I felt bad that he just purchased his bike and it ended up being a lemon. I even offered to help him part the bike out to re-coop some of his money, but he was going to wait and think about what he wanted to do. I think that I've been more than fair with him from the beginning on this deal considering that his bike is years old and we were just trying to diagnose what was going on. I can see his point about machining the cylinder, but that's also why I didn't charge him for the machine work in the first place. Either way, the bike needed to be disassembled for diagnosis, and he approved disassembly.I've also attached the original invoice that I gave to the customer
