Hurlbutt Designs handled the [redacted] Estate Sale as an accommodation to an old and valued client.  It should be noted that estate sales are not part of our business model but because the closing on the sale of the property was getting very close we agreed to do it. [redacted] would participate in the project and at least clear out the family’s personal items (clothing, toiletries and anything that they might want to keep). He would/could not come up to Kennebunk so it was left to us to completely clear out the house prior to the new owners taking possession.  November is a very quiet month in Maine (leaf season is over and people are quiet before Thanksgiving and the Christmas Holidays). Drumming up interest in an Estate Sale was more difficult than we had anticipated so we began calling clients that were involved in renovating their Kennebunk properties to try to generate interest. With Mr. [redacted]’s approval a few blocks of furnishings were sold prior to our clients prior the sale date. The initial rush on the sale date was encouraging but after the initial flurry we realized the there was still a lot to be sold. Knowing that it all had to go we became more flexible on the pricing of used furnishings that had stains or damage. Virtually everything was 7 years old and subject to use by numerous renters. We were not successful in meeting our or Mr. [redacted]’s expectations. It should be noted that Hurlbutt Designs needed to achieve a significantly higher level of sales to cover its cost on this project.  On several occasions we have sent to Mr. and Mrs. [redacted] a detailed list of all items purchased from Hurlbutt Designs with the prices paid. Today we sent Mr. [redacted] a full list of all items sold in sale and a list of items that we have on consignment. As items sell we send checks to Mr. & Mrs. [redacted].
