Holds a monopoly on the Hopi Reservation, and is not flexible or willing to help with obvious deficiencies in services (rather services not provided).
People on the Hopi Res, have 2 options. First, they can sign up with Hopi Tel for either their DSL or Wildblue package. Second they can outsource to [redacted] or [redacted] for service. All 3 satellite options are equally overpriced and provide limited speeds and access, so naturally, the best option would be to overpay grossly for Hopi Tel's DSL package. This maxes out at 3 meg (regardless of the fact that they're testing 4.3 and up at the DSLAM...) and costs $80 per month for the DSL itself, combined with another 20 per month for the prerequisite land line phone (contrary to the fact that it is "naked" dsl). You are also REQUIRED to buy THEIR modem, for which they charge you $120... It is a comtrend ar-5381u, which a simple google search would show can be purchased for a little more than 1/10 the cost on amazon or a similar online retailer.
The area IS very remote, so like most people I was initially fine with paying a bit more.... you are "lucky" to have ANYTHING here regardless of the fact that internet is much more of a necessity than amenity in this age of information. You cannot however, hope to consistently get 50% of your advertised speeds.
The excuses will baffle the mind of the educated subscriber, and dazzle the uninformed. They have ranged from blaming the home network, to claiming that there is nothing wrong at all, and their techs are underprepared for the task at hand.
If you can last for your stay in 1st or 2nd Mesa without using their services, I strongly suggest you do so.
