Mr. [redacted] initially came into my shop in October of 2015 to have the cooling system and engine area checked for leaks. In regards to the oil leak we found the valve cover gasket was leaking and the customer declined the repair at that time. The customer returned in November of 2015 to...
have more cooling system repairs done that was declined on the previous visit and to have the oil leak repair performed. While performing the oil leak repair we found that at some point prior to us working on the valve cover gasket some one else had inserted a screw that was the incorrect size. We performed the repair and installed the correct sized screw. If the valve cover was cracked then the vehicle would not have left this shop. The engine would have started to sputter while the vehicle was here. Further more, Mr. [redacted] informed the secretary and the technician who performed the repair that he initially replaced the valve cover gasket himself and had lost the screw and installed the wrong sized screw. When the vehicle left the shop the engine light was off and the vehicle was running correctly. I did not hear from Mr. [redacted] until after the new year that he had to have the valve cover replaced while Florida. The customer sent us the invoice from the BMW dealership pertaining to the valve cover replacement and it is stated on the invoice that the customer went to another aftermarket shop to have a starter replaced and that this other shop ([redacted]) was going to pay the bill for the valve cover since that was when the sputtering began. I have attached all pertinent invoices relating to this concern. I feel that I should not be held responsible to refund any monies for the valve cover since this is a 9 year old vehicle with approximately 70,000 miles and the valve cover is plastic. Especially since it had been over a month and 2000 miles between my invoice date and the invoice date from the dealer. We never told the customer that his engine will catch on fire if he didn't do the repair and due to the fact that the customer himself worked on the vehicle prior and another shop worked on the vehicle after coming to my shop that any and all claims to a refund are null and void. The customer did not attempt to contact me when the concern happened in any form.
