To Whom It May Concern:
The 1999 Honda Civic was towed into the shop for a "No Start Condition" on September 17, 2019. We charged the battery and checked it out. The starter would not turn over from the key at this point, so I jumped it from the starter. It had spark and fuel pressure. I pulled the plugs and found they were wet. I tried to pressure test the cooling system, but it would not hold any pressure. I cranked it again after I dried and reinstalled the spark plugs and it was blowing out of the radiator. It evidently got hot, so hot it melted the "Timing Belt Back Cover". I notified him that he had a blown head gasket and told him that the secretary would be calling him with an estimate. She called him with an estimate for Parts and Labor with a 12-month warranty, and he said it was too much. He decided to get his own parts and let us do the labor. When we got it apart, he decided to take the cylinder head to a machine shop of his choice. He brought the cylinder head back without getting the valve job done. He said he didn't need the valve job. I asked him if he was sure and he insisted I put it back together. We had a few big jobs and I hurt my back on one of them. So that slowed the jobs down. We got the car back together and it would not hold pressure due to a bad heater hose. He decided to get the hose himself and got the wrong hose. I did research and gave him the correct part number where he went to ***'s and got the correct hose. I replaced the hose and I took it for a test drive up the street. It ran good except for an "idle hunting issue" once it warmed up in Park. I don't know how it ran before, so I checked for vacuum leaks and made sure it had coolant flow through the Idle Control Valve. They were good so I Recommended an "Engine Diagnostic" which he declined. He came and picked it up on October 31, 2019. He asked about the warranty and I explained to him again that there is no warranty because he purchased his own parts and used his own machine shop and didn't get the head completely reconditioned. About an hour later he called and said the car stopped running. I went over to where the car was to check it out and realized that it did not have any spark. I explained to him that it was the coil or the distributor. I could have it towed back to the shop to do a complete check. If it is the coil or distributor, he would have to pay for the tow, parts and labor. I would not charge for the "No Start Diagnostic" because he just paid for one. I got it towed back to the shop and checked everything. It was the coil, so I recommended the distributor. He decided to get the part and dropped it off. I got ready to do the job and the distributor was wrong. The next day he returned with the right one, I installed the distributor and test drove it. I let him know it was ready for pick up. He came and got it. Then he called back and said that it broke down again. The Secretary told him to call me since I wasn't at the shop. He told her "it was okay and that I had already took his money and he will deal with it another way". I never received a call or text from him. Did he take it to another shop to find out why it wasn't running? We did not do anything but try to help him get his car fixed. I have no control of electrical parts going bad.
This is a severely neglected vehicle that did not have any maintenance done until it was completely broke and inoperable. He wanted to do the minimum and did not take any of our recommendations. He said I took over $1200 dollars from him. He paid $614.25 on October 31 and $133.25 on November 6. We did not receive any other funds from him.
