I received a letter 7/17/18 from CPW stating we need to pay $500 deposit by 7/31/18 or make payment arrangements or our services will be disconnected. This was due to payment history. The payments are due by the first of the month, but they give you until the 12th of the month to pay before disconnection. When I first signed up with them I didn’t have to pay a deposit due to good payments with previous company. My complaint is why give a grace period then charge a $500 deposit when customers have to use it. There was a disconnection once after I called and got an approval for a day extension. This just doesn’t seem like fair practice.
Good morning Kelli,
Please see the attached response regarding our recent complaint (ID ***)
Greer CPW’s deposit policy states that “a deposit is required if the applicant receives an unsatisfactory credit rating from the Online Utility Exchange, has left a previous bad debt…or does not maintain a satisfactory payment history. A deposit may be required if:
Customer has been disconnected for nonpayment two (2) times during a twelve (12) month periodCustomer has had one (1) returned item (NSF) in a twelve (12) month periodCustomer has had one (1) returned item (NSF) and one (1) disconnect of services in a twelve (12) month periodCustomer has been disconnected for a returned item (NSF)Customer does not provide a social security numberCo-signer agreement expired, and the customer has not established a satisfactory payment history, and the customer cannot obtain a new co-signerCustomer’s payment history is not satisfactory and they are transferring to an account requiring an additional deposit
In the case a customer is asked to place a deposit on their respective account, and after 18 months of service with no more than two (2) late payments, no returned items (NSF) and no disconnects for non-payment, then deposit will be applied to the account.
In this scenario, the customer was verified to have a satisfactory payment history with a previous utility provider(s). Therefore, no deposits were required at the time of sign-up. Consequently, over the past twelve (12) months the customers services were disconnected for non-payment two (2) times, which made this account subject to the policy above.
