Bells and Whistles
Being new to the area, I booked an appointment with FYi Doctors based on mixed reviews, some positive (eye care expertise) and some negative (mostly eye glass fitting and pricing). While I felt satisfied with the optometrist's clinical expertise, apart from feeling pressured into a test that I made very clear before hand that I was not agreeable to, which undermines patient self-determination, the selection and fitting of my glasses was extremely incompetent and exorbitantly priced. Little did I realize the corporate nature of FYi Doctors until it was too late. Long story short, despite a large selection of frames, none of them suited me or were small enough. However, the optician offered to order some sample frames online, and followed up with a phone call the next day to see if I'd be interested. Against my better judgment, I agreed. There was only one pair that was passable, but not the best fit, but was told - how many times have I heard that line - they can be adjusted. Long story short, because of a discount on multiple pairs of glasses, I invested in regular progressive, prescription sunglass (using my old frames) and blue light computer glasses, which came to over $2,300.00. The brand of lens used by FYi, a Canadian based corporation that is expanding into the US, is Hoya, which I have never heard of (and I have been wearing glasses a very long time). The turnaround time was two weeks for each order of glasses. I received a call to let me know my regular progressive glasses were available for pickup, that no appointment was necessary, so I dropped in the next day. The customer service rep handed me the glasses to try on and asked how they felt and only made adjustments after I requested it. I could not see properly out of them and they were too loose and crooked. I went next door to a store to pick up some things and couldn't read the print, so I marched right back. The optician who ordered and took measurements for me had returned and I requested to see her. I explained the problem and she said, yes, she could tell right away the glasses were sitting too high on my face, and were crooked, which would interfere with the vision. She adjusted them again, but I had to go back for more adjustments. There is still something off about them, and she did a poor job of adjusting the glasses - still to loose in front, too tight behind the ears and sometimes have trouble with acuity of focus. When I picked up my computer glasses, I couldn't read a thing and there was a dark, hazy quality to them. Again, I went back to the optician, who told me that (due to my misunderstanding), she had ordered single rather than progressive lenses because they were just for reading at the computer. Luckily I was able to get my money back for those. The sunglasses, apart from the benefit of an additional blue light filter added, are very poor fitting and the vision is slightly off. However, I have given up on FYi Doctors and will now have to go to another place to reassess and correct these problems, which no doubt will me more money.
