Review: I contracted with Fireplace Construction (FC) to repair chimney tuck-pointing, replace and install a new concrete chimney cap and to install a gas fireplace insert. After the work was started, [redacted] of FC suggested that the chimney cap did not need replacing. He said it needed resurfacing instead. He suggested that the old cap stay in place and a new layer of concrete be added to the top of the old cap. This would save FC, "a lot of work" and save me $300.00. I agreed only after being told that all work is guaranteed for 10 years. However, the resurfacing began to crack in less than a week after installation. The resurfacing cracked in at least six places. It appears as if the old and new concrete did not bond correctly. FC did return and inspect the cracks but they said the cracks were not a problem. [redacted] of FC said the cracks were, "Better than expected." I was never told that any of their work would crack in any way. I'm concerned about the cold weather freeze / thaw cycle. The cracks appear as if they will expand during that cycle. I have pictures of the cracks. [redacted] said that the pictures make the cracks look, "Worse than they really are." I asked Fireplace Construction to remove the old concrete cap and the new resurfaced layer then replace the entire concrete cap with a new one. This is the way the contract was written by their salesperson. I offered to return the $300.00. They refused my offer and will not do any repairs.Desired Settlement: I would like FC to replace the cap entirely, both the old and new concrete, or to provide a refund large enough so that I can have the cap replaced by a different company. I'm in the process of getting estimates for a new cap.
