Fire Island Ferries has a $10 additional charge for all passengers using the Saturday night (Sunday AM) 1:00 am ferry from Ocean Beach to Bay Shore. This pricing was submitted and approved by the Suffolk County Legislature which regulates our fares. On many Saturday nights we have two or three boats...
in Ocean Beach to handle 500+ passengers waiting to go back to Bay Shore. We start loading the first boat at approximately 12:30 and when that boat is full, it departs for Bay Shore, most Saturday nights it leaves before 1:00 AM. That first boat, even though it may leave before 1:00 AM is still considered the 1:00 AM ferry, requiring the extra $10:00 charge. The Fire Island Ferries staff that works the 1:00 AM Ocean Beach ferry is made up of senior crew members all with many years of experience, they are instructed to either collect a 1:00 AM ticket or $10.00. They are not given the authority to wave the $10.00 charge or negotiate a fare. Th is customer utilized our service, stayed until the 1:00 AM ferry and therefore is subject to the extra $10.00 fee.
Review: Of a regular passenger of the ferry to Fire Island, I am very upset to find that your staff charged my friend an I 10 dollars each when the Ferry left before 1 am. I know policy is that after 1 am ticket prices go up, but when upon boarding the ferry at 12 :30 am the staff informed us that we need to pay because the ferry would leave after 1 am. The ferry did not leave at 1, but the staff still charged us $10
a person. This experience is turning my family and I off from ever using the ferry system . I would strongly suggest hiring a more curtious and generous ataff,Desired Settlement: Please refund us the $38 we spent on the round trip to Fire Island. We will take the $10
a piece charge.
