ETD spoke to the customer. Since the complaint was from almost 1 year ago we refunded the complete disputed amount in full as a goodwill gesture.
Review: Background:
• On December 12, 2012 we purchased 4 winter snow tires (Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70 BW XL) from ETD in Denville.
• We also purchased at that time a Freedom Plan Road Hazzard Warranty for $75.36 plus tax. The Freedom Plan states:
“ Your American Car Centers Freedom Plan Limited Warranty covers your new tires for a specified amount of Time and/or Mileage for Treadwear and Roadside Hazard damage resulting from normal driving conditions which render the tire unserviceable”. (Emphasis added)
• The tires were on the vehicle from Dec 28, 2012 to late March 2013 and again from Dec 2013 to March 2014. A total of less than seven months and 13,000 miles.
Review:
• On November 7, 23014 the tires were brought to ETD before they were reinstalled for the upcoming winter season because the tread depth was markedly different between all four tires. The range of condition was from good to extremely poor, despite the fact that the tires had been rotated prior to the season. Since each of the four tires had extremely different levels of wear under relatively short usage we felt that warranty coverage was appropriate for the two tires in poor condition.
• ETD initially stated that mechanical problems might be to blame for the unusual wear. However, they inspected the front end as well as the alignment and found no indication of a mechanical problem. The technician stated clearly that this was a “wear issue” and noted how the wear pattern across each nindividual tire was even.
• The ETD management then informed us that the supplemental coverage we purchased did not in fact include wear or product failure, but only road hazards. They also noted that we needed to prove that we rotated the tires.
• The requirement to prove that we the rotated tires was odd for a few reasons. For example, if wear is not covered by the policy then why are we required prove we rotated the tires. We mount our winter tires ourselves each year, how can this be proven? ...Desired Settlement: • ETD sold us a policy that clearly included treadwear and road hazard. They are refusing to honor the terms of that contract. If they are correct and the policy somehow excludes treadwear despite the clear wording in the policy itself then this policy was sold under misleading circumstances.
• ETD should cover the cost of replacing the two tires or refund the purchase price of the policy.
Review: [redacted] & Art Hanley were present at this time. I brought in my car to get my passenger right tire patched up, as there was a nail in it as of a couple of days ago. They provided this service. Additionally, during that service, I had purchased a warranty prior, which included a free tire rotation, so I had that service performed simultaneous. Thereafter, after picking up my car from ETD, I noticed a small clunking noise coming from that side. I did not bother taking it back to ETD, because it was such a small noise. A couple of days later I noticed it getting progressively worse, and asked if ETD could take a look at it. They claimed it was a problem with the sway bar, which they claim is completely unrelated to getting a tire rotation. I spoke to a few independent mechanics of mine, who said when the ETF mechanic put the tires back on, they must have been careless and slammed the sway bar. [redacted] refused to accept that maybe one of his mechanics messed up, and the issue with the sway bar was not caused by them. I did not drive the car at all for the next two days until the day before I decided to bring it in. They said I must have hit something hard. Being very displeased with their service, I decided to take my business elsewhere. Even if they did take care of the issue free of charge, there is no reason to trust them with their service. I brought my car in for an inspection one time which I had to pay for, and they diagnosed an issue that was completely WRONG and still had me pay for it.Desired Settlement: For ETD to pay the invoice for the job at the other mechanic shop
