Cut A Deal Tree Company

We bought our first home that had land for the first time and wanted to cut down some trees. Not having owned a house with a big property before we were unaware that we needed tree permits. We hired a guy named Lane who came knocking on our door one day handing us his flyer saying he would beat anyone's prices. He was reasonable and we hired him. During the time they were cutting down a tree in our front yard the city knocked on our door and said we had a fine of over 1100 because we didn't have a permit for the tree they just cut down. Lane never mentioned to us that we needed a permit. Additionally they did not cut down the last tree that they had been paid for because I told them that I needed to obtain a permit first. I later texted him and said we would like a refund because after the fine we couldn't afford a permit. He said he couldn't give us a refund and asked to make it up to us in doing a different job with our landscaping on our property. We agreed. We have now called and texted multiple times. He does no longer respond to messages and calls, and he never once called us back when he said he would. Lane and his workers also damaged our firepit as well, and never tried to do anything to compensate for it.
