Dear [redacted]Method RH 130-15 pg. 138 (Document #1) was used to install the porcelain tile and Schluter Ditra-Heat. The existing sub-floor/underlayment is: 5/8” plywood sub-floor, with a 1/2” plywood/concrete board as underlayment, as the drawing shows. This is an approved method with...
the result being a sturdy floor system. Any removal of substrate/underlayment will result in a failure or comprise of strength. According to the system – 2 layers of plywood/sub-floor along with the Ditra Heat Mat/Cables will result in a floor 1-7/8”x2” thick.*A Schluter reducer was used at the transition to the hardwood according to Method TR 611-15 pg. 282 (D-#2), the only option is to install additional sub-floor under hardwood to bring it up to finish height.Page 35 NTCA handbook states: (quote) Lippage in Ceramic Tile Installation allows for 1/16” lippage. (D-#3) Tuscan lippage control was used to keep within standards, along with a flemmish 1/3 bond. Tile from Home Depot had typical warpage as found in tile12”x24”.Owner was informed that the grout used – 100% urethane has a tendency to shrink/sink down into grout joints and that some touch-up would be required, which was agreed to do at a later date. Customer then wrote out check seeming to be very happy with the results. The amount was $2600 made out to [redacted] Tile & Stone May 20 2017. Which a few days later was canceled.Removal of any tile will void warranty of Schluter Ditra-Heat.Directional troweling with a European style notch trowel according to approved NTCA guidelines. In Conclusion: The Tile System is designed as specified, and any removal of sub-floor/plywood to lower in order to meet up with hardwood will result in a failed system. The only solution is to raise the height of the hard wood floor by adding an inexpensive underlayment. If the customer does not agree to this we have no choice but to exercise our Lien rights as stated in her contract. We will be issuing a “Notice to file Lien” on the property.Sincerely,[redacted] Tile & Stone
