When [redacted] came to our office for her annual eye exam we had asked if she had any problems at the front desk she answered no. ...

When our technician did their exam [redacted] chief complaint was itching, flashes and floaters and shimmering lights,which then made it a medical exam. Our biller had talked to her and told her that she had a chief complaint and the doctor coded it as a medical diagnosis and she should contact her insurance company directly. It's understandable that most pts. come in for an annual knowing that we have explained before hand that if you have a complaint it will then go medical. and they sign off on saying yes they understand. We are in the process of refunding the patient $50.00. We have been telling our patients that they need to contact their insurance companies explaining what they are coming in for to see if it will be covered under annual or medical. any complaint is always billed medical.
