Review:
My father passed away in August and his remains were taken to Community Cremation. I told them up front that I would be unable to personally pay for his cremation but that there were funds in his estate to pay for those expenses. I also explained that as part of the probate process, his estate funds would be frozen for 40 days. I waited and waited for his death certificate so that I could file the probate paperwork. After waiting for over a week for the certificate, I contacted Community Cremation and was told that they WOULD NOT issue the death certificate until I paid for his cremation.
I threatened to report them to the Washington State Department of Health for holding his death certificate hostage and they finally relented and said they would mail them. Receiving the death certificate in the mail took an additional 4-5 days - they were sent from Spokane to Seattle.
I then again explained the probate process to the manager. (Honestly...they deal with death on a daily basis. Surely they have some understanding about probate and frozen assets.) Rather than the sensitive understanding that I expected, I was subject to a barrage of telephone calls and mailings - all with an increasingly threatening tone. I especially enjoyed the phone call in which the manager told me that I SHOULD HAVE paid for his cremation before he died and I wouldn't be dealing with paying his bills during the probate process. Really? My Dad was ill and I should have been pre-paying his death expenses?
And guess what?? The assets were unfrozen, I set up an estate checking account, and I paid the bill. Just like I said I would from the very start.
I understand they are a business but they are also dealing with a court process, bereavement, and death. Perhaps I am naïve to expect some sensitivity.
