We purchased a 2000 Chevy Blazer from Christine's Auto Sales in Worcester, MA. On the "Lemon Law" form it stated that Mr. Shaw had the right to determine where the vehicle was repaired under the "lemon law" clause. We live 70 miles or so from his establishment. We gave him a deposit for the vehicle and the next day went back to give him the rest of the money in cash and finish paperwork.
Before we signed the title and got the rest of the paperwork for the registry, I asked Mr. Shaw if "in the event the car needed repair under the lemon law warranty, could we take it to our local mechanic to have it repaired?" His answser was " I don't have a problem with that as long as you don't go to a dealership and have it cost thousands of dollars". I said " no it is our local mechanic that does all of our work on my other vehicle." He said "then that would be fine". Oh it was fine until we had our mechanic check out the vehicle and found the rear differential cover had holes all in it and the rear end of the Blazer would have blown. Our mechanic would not let us drive it to prevent that damage. My husband called Mr. Shaw and told him of the repair that was necessary and he said to fix it. The cost was $190. We paid for it and Mr. Shaw said to my husband " $190, I could have fixed it for $150". So my husband said "OK then we will take the $150 to prevent us from having to pay towing to get it to Worcester.
Mr. Shaw had "no recollection of that conversation" later.
Then one of the leaf spring shackles was cracked and needed to be replaced. So we had that done. He disputed that cost as well. We just had the shackle replaced, went to pick up the vehicle and the front brake lines blew. My husband called Mr. Shaw again and he wanted my husband to "drive the vehicle with no front brakes from Dartmouth, MA to Worcester, MA (about 75 miles) so he could fix the vehicle.
The total amount of repairs to the Blazer was $890. Mr. Shaw wrote up a bill of his own that came to $370 and that is what he intended to pay. We didn't cash his check because on the back was written "the cashing of this check acknowleges payment in full of the warranty repairs." After numerous emails to him he finally told us that he would give us $80 more and that was it. This brought the amount he was willing to pay to $450.
We contacted the Attorney General of Massachusetts and explained what happened and we were told that because none of the agreement to have our mechanic do the repairs was in writing on our paperwork, we didn't have a case.
We also didn't get the alarm remote or the extra key until the end of the warranty and we were forced into to taking half of the out of pocket monies we paid for repairs.
I would never buy another vehicle from this establishment or Mr. Shaw and would advise that unless you get ALL coversations with him in writing, not to purchase from here or him either.
A man is only as good as his word. That should tell you something right there!
